best time to dig?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I only have a couple that I want to take out of the ground, but when is the best time? right before frost, or do it now and let them get used to the pot with the same light they have??

i would also like to know when the best time to dig brugs out of the ground. a complete change around on the weather in the desert. night time temps soared down to lower 40ish, whereas daytime is in the upper 70ish. the past few days the wind blowing very strong! it would seem we are due for a cold and harsh winter coming our way.

the strong winds was so bad, our phone lines was deeply affected. we didn't have phone or dsl and cable service for 2 days which is divastating! am so glad to be back on line!

most of the brugs on the ground have buds on them. should i dig and repot them now??? looking forward to some input on the subject. thanks!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

We have spent the last week digging up and potting Brugs because our weather is so unpredictable. We already had one night of 38 degrees and now are having a hot spell again. As frost can come at any time at least now we can drag the pots in the GH if need be.The first ones we dug up wilted terribly even in the shade and took about a week to perk back up. Got the rest dug up so they could adjust to the pot before putting them in the GH which can turn quite hot in the daytime. Also found that the ones that were dug up in the evening after the sun went down adusted much better than the ones dug up in the morning.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I agree with Snow. Dig in the evening for sure. Seems like Monika or someone suggested digging, root trimming, be done so that they can still grow into the pots before putting them away for the winter. I'm sure, like any other plant, they need some time to adjust to new living quarters. Maybe someone who knows will come along and give you a definite time table.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

thank Snow! i think i will have to water around the brugs on the ground... to facilitate easy digging. accdg to this site... http://www.floridata.com/tracks/misc/frostdates.htm , our frost date is Dec. 8, i wonder???

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

That sight is very accurate for my area. Concord is about 100 miles south of me so we get frost a little earlier than they do.
Being the Brugs were full of seed pods and buds we didn't trim off hardly any roots thinking it might shock them even more and they would drop the pods. Maybe that was a mistake and the roots should have been trimmed.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

maybe i should complain and procrastinate more often LOL! suddenly today, all the clouds and strong winds vanished. ant it got warmer. whooopppppppeeee! but then again, no one knew what Mother Nature got off her sleeves. at least i got a few days more to wait :)! i hope!!!

(Zone 5a)

I would like to know once you place them indoors will they die back and look dead or will they continue to grow and bloom?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL Ma Vie, where do you find these sites.........that one is great!! Thought last year I remember having petunias blooming right up to February and then a frost got them. I was disappointed. I thought I was going to have 2 years of petunias.

Wow....I am even impressed with my area

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wind, If you put them in a sunny window or under lights and water and fertilize they will continue to grow and bloom.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

That link is pretty accurate for us too, but Bismarck is the closest city listed to me, and it says the first frost date is Sept 20th. That's pretty close, but Bismarck is 120 miles East of here, and we normally get first frost about a week earlier. So.......ugggg....it's gonna happen pretty soon here.

I'm so worried about my bulbs I have ordered from the fall flower bulb co-op. But, we usually have a nice indian summer after the first frost, so I'm hoping!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Joan, Hope you get those bulbs soon and in the ground. The weather has been so crazy maybe the frost will be late.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh Snowhermit, we deserve a late frost, since we had such a messed up spring, don't you think? The stupid spring we had up here took at least 2 or 3 weeks off our growing season.

(Zone 5a)

Thanks Snow :}

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I sure hope Oct. 17 is right and that it will be later than that. MVR, you are so good at finding just the right site for what we need. Thanks so much!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I did also Ma Vie, I am getting old!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

for all intent and purposes, i might be more older than u Kelley LOL!

btw... do u bring ur younger brugs indoors? if not mistaken, it is far colder up here than where u are! my son always is surprised whenever i tell him there is snow on the ground. does it snow where u are?

from personal experienced, i've seen lots of brug trees in people's yard north of where i live.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have never worried about anything before this year. Now I am afraid everything is going to die!! I think I am going to bribe my husband to build me a makeshift GH if I can find out where to buy heavy plastic. Just a small one for some protection. No , no snow!! One in many years there may be a light light snow up in the hills.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Just start doing a search on line for greenhouse plastic or whatever it is called.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

ok, and I need to buy some of that frost fabic you sent me the link to. What do you think if I just wrap the fabric around the plant, aroound and around all the way up? Sev. layers? for the plants that are in the ground?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

ARLENE..................do not forget to send me all the best ones before your swap!!!! And I am not talking Frosties..........................

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)
