lantana propogation

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA(Zone 8b)

What is the best way to propogate lantana?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

cut, stick in soil, keep watered well. so far I haven't found any that don't take this way.

I agree with TiG. You can save seeds too, they germinate easy, but don't come true.

Thanks for the info. I am getting ready to take cuttings.

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

Golddog, what kinds or colors of lantana do you have? I have a variegated one that blooms yellow and a couple of others that are the pink, coral, yellow combination. I know there is a purplish pink one too that I have seen in California that I would love to get some cuttings of. If we have somethings that are different from each other and have success rooting would you be interested in trading some starts?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lenjo, but I have only limited space in the basement. What with other cuttings, seeds (a lot), and getting ready for a garden tour next year.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Lenjo, I have yellow, white and lavender trailing kinds, I can send cuttings for postage if you want. also one like the yellow, orange, red one, but it's pink and yellow. lmk

I have lantana camara Miss Huff and have rooted it in water before very easily. I'm trying confetti and a yellow one now also in water to see if they root as easily.

tiG, What difference have you found in rooting woody lantana versus soft-stemmed trailing lantana? I have both and have been wondering, but haven't gotten around to experimenting.

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

Ok I am a new gardener and really want to save my lantana from the frost. Where do I cut and I just drop it in water? How long to root?? I would love to have good sixe plants to put out in the spring. Please let me know!!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Rik, I'm just now taking cuttings of the trailing varieties. But I didn't root woody cuttings of the large one, I took 4-6" tips. Happyoma, take twice as many as you might want, cause it's gonna be too late soon. Just take tip cuttings, take off the bottom leaves and stick in moist soil. Haven't tried them in water.

Birmingham, AL(Zone 7b)

Happy -- I haven't tried lantana yet, but whenever I'm rooting something in soil or another solid medium, I keep a close watch on the leaves for the first few days. If they start to wilt, I mist them. If that doesn't help, I mist more frequently, on the bottom and top of the leaves. If that doesn't help, I put the whole shebang in an inflated, transparent, plastic bag. That provides a 100%-humidity environment and usually works.

The length of time you leave them in there depends on the plant. Azaleas take six weeks. Most tropical vines take two to four weeks. Some coleus just need it for a couple of days, until they have grown enough roots to keep the leaves hydrated and healthy. Anything will take longer this time of year than spring or summer.

I also use transparent cups for rooting and generally don't consider something rooted sufficiently to send to someone until I can see the roots against the bottom or sides of the cup.

Laurel, MD(Zone 7a)

OHHHHHHHHH I love the transparent cup idea... why I haven't heard of it before -- great tip. I will go get those ASAP. Thanks so much.

The way i've been rooting them is water is to take the green tip, not woody, cutting up to 12" long. I take a 2 liter diet coke bottle and remove the label then cut it in half and put 2-3" of water in it. I strip all the bottom leaves off the cuttings and stick them in water and put the container on my bathroom windowsill. Usually they root in about a month. Confetti hasn't rooted for me yet at all but both Miss Huff and now the yellow have rooted this way. Confetti hasn't rotted or died, just no roots yet. The cuttings look the same as when I put them in the water.

Have started some seeds that "eyes" sent me for SASE
So far they haven't come up but it may take a while.

Would love to get cuttings if the seeds don't take.

I've got that trailing purple lantana all over the place. Could ship cuttings, no problem. Anyone know how to package the cuttings so that they'd arrive in good shape?

That is very nice of you to offer; for me here in Iowa would have to wait til our freezing weather is over.
Will contact you in the spring.
