These catalogs list plants as HARDY to zone9 but don't take into consideration the HEAT which will do a plant in as fast as a cold snap. At least you can protect your plants from a quick freeze...we rarely have a hard freeze here in Sarasota...it may dip to 30 but stays there for only a little while...like hours. I wish they would start publishing a heat zone as well!

Dale, there is - the American Horticultural Society (AHS) has a "heat zone map" : http://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm
and you'll see more and more plants listed in catalogs with their AHS heat zones as well as the USDA zone ranges.
There's been some discord among gardeners on how applicable and accurate the data is (I guess it's like anything new - change is always hard for some to accept, and sometimes "bugs" need to be worked out of any system. The USDA zone system still has its detractors, too and it's been around quite a while :)
