Little baby jade

It's the miracle of life, and one of the cutest things you'll ever see: a baby jade emerging from a shriveled leaf that fell off the parent plant. Isn't it interesting how just one single leaf can produce an entire new plant?

I put him in my journal under the "Big Bucket O' Jade" item. Here's the direct URL:

Dave, what do you do with all those babies?

I have a bunch, also a bunch of mama and daddy plants. Two are mine, the others I inherited from a late friend. Oh, yes, and one a neighbor gave me when she moved. They all have babies. Seems like every leaf that falls off makes a new plant. I haven't counted lately, but they sure are cute.

Leafy,

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them, but I just like to have lots and lots of jade. I'm thinking that maybe one day my wife and I will start putting together nice plant baskets that include different kinds of plants in the same pot, and try to sell them.

In the meantime, I'm building up my inventory.

Somebody told me once that Jade plants are supposed to be good luck. They are one of my favorites, but they are multiplying so fast I have to wonder if they have some ulterior botanical motive in mind for me.... 8-(

Jades...have quite a few in the greenhouse, and in our house. Love 'em! Once I had one about two feet tall and 18 to 20 inches wide...we used it for our Christmas tree that yr, put little red balls on it and a super-small string of lites. One of the best trees I've ever had!

I have a Jade that is about 19 years old. This summer it lost a leaf that sprouted laying behind the pot on the floor for how ? long. I put the old part into potting soil to feed the new one. Baby is 2 inches high now. I didn't know they do this, but it must be quite common. Besides this, the parent plant is sprouting stems from the trunk. I repotted it last spring, is this the reason for all this activity? How big do Jade plants get? Will it take over the living room? I have asked my husband to build a room for it.

The bigged jade plant I've seen was about 6 feet high. It was a very impressive tree! I don't think you'll need to build a new room for it. ;)

Sometimes, a jade's branch will seem to lose it's ambition to stand up straight, and will start to lean over (and sometimes lean completely down over the lip of the pot). When this happens, he'll start growing the tip back upward, and roots will start coming out of the bottom curve of the branch. Whenever I see the branch leaning down like this, I watch for the roots. when the roots appear, I clip him off below the roots and transplant the cutting to soil. He immediately takes off as a new jade plant.

Mobody had said why they think your jade plant looses it's
leaves. Mine has never done that. Anybody got any idea why these two behave so differently? I let mine get pretty dry between waterings, sometimes some of the leaves start to wrinkle and then plump up again when it gets water. It's home is next to an east facing window, so it gets the morning sun in the winter, but in the summer we keep the blinds closed until the sun is off that side of the house to keep the house cooler. I see no difference in the plant between winter and summer. Also I have no drooping limbs but have seen them on another huge plant. Mine is 20 inches high from the soil level and 26 inches wide. I don't need a room for it yet, but if I had a room it would get lots of other plants for company. I'm running out of windowsills. Just planning ahead!

I have many many different kinds of jade here, and only one of them droops branches and drops leaves. The others - I've not had a single problem with.

The problem jade is also my largest and oldest... Every spring is comes back with full fury, and I am constantly getting compliments on him. He's done this 3 winters in a row (he didn't do it the first winter) and always comes back to life in the springtime.
