Spring!

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

I walked around the gardens today - and to my great surprize I found hydrangea's putting out new leaves! My mums were too!

What's happening in your gardens?

Hi ya' Grits! I have some cabbage starting to make heads, also my broccoli is starting to produce. My lettuce is beautiful! My garlic and strawberries are getting along fine and I can't wait to eat 'em all!!! Bye, Lisa

Hi Lisa - I planted some Romaine lettuce and it is sooooo delicious! My spinach hasn't done well, but I'm planning on a large, spinach salad for dinner tonight.

My Hydrangeas have nice big buds also! My sister brought it to my attention yesterday. My Weeping Cherry and my hedges all have buds also. Havent checked anything on the ground because of the snow. Hopefully the snow melts so I can watch for my crocus. When can I expect them to pop up (Zone 7)? This is the first year I have them. I planted about 500 bulbs in the fall so I am really excited for Spring to roll around.

Grits, Isn't it nice to be soooo southern!!!Ya'll..

Kunkletown, PA(Zone 6a)

My mud is just so picturesque, the dead leaves the loveliest shade of brown, trees so beautiful and stark against the cloudy rainy sky, the gorgeous lumps of filthy snow that make me sigh, ahhhhh, I love winter.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Marlowe, if it is any consulation, everything looks about the same here. Except the snow...however, my garden does break up the drab! Oh yeah, we do have pretty pansies and snapdragons blooming now (sorry) Sending you green garden thoughts your way!:-) Lisa

The willow limbs are starting to turn red...a sign of spring! I also need to correct something I said earlier...I found this in one of my gardening magazines...Spring moves north about 16 miles a day...so see, that's better!

MzMunchken - Agree on the waiting for the next freeze to kill our new growth back. Weather shows 30's again this weekend and it's raining now - much needed.

It was a real revelation to me that plants need the same amount of water in the Winter (duh) that they do other times of the year, so I'm thankful I'm not having to water!

What kind of tropicals do you grow? I ordered white butterfly ginger lily bulbs in November (what a dumb thing to do) and have them in a pot. Hope they make it until I can work the bed outside for them.

Paperwhites? Is this narcissus? My daffodils haven't even come up yet. I remember the ones Mac's mom had that she called butter and cream? Wish I had some, but the "old" farm place is no more.

Grits, do you have any Siam Tulips? Those are so showy in August. My hydrangeas & roses are budding also. Looks like we will have 67 degree weather tomorrow and that means outside for me.

Hi! Dene - No, don't have any Siam tulips. Send us a picture, or more info.

there's a single daff in flower in my garden. it opened over the week-end.
I took a photo of it today and sent the film away. I'll let everyone see it this Saturday when it is due back from the lab.

Ahh spring, I just love it. Walked around the garden today, still frozen solid. Went up to the barn and visited my tiller, still 90-100 days out for that. Had to punch through a snow drift to fill the bird feeder. Spring will come, just be patient.

MzMunchken! Your plants are beautiful! One day. . .

Well, the glacier that is my driveway is beginning to calve; the dog can finally run through the snow instead of having to stay on the paths that had to be made for him to get around; the cats are able to get out on the front porch and I've even seen one of them out in the parking area where the sun hits and the snow has melted. I checked the Hammemelis but don't see signs of it getting ready to bloom.

BUT I do think the birds are beginning to sing - some of the ducks seem to be pairing up - the hooded mergansers are at the height of their breeding plumage - yes I think spring is on it's way.

As I'd mentioned in another thread, there's a great book about sring's arrival "North with the Spring" by Edwin Way Teale - a really good read.

Ah, more dreary weather today. Spring where are you?
Two more months to go. . .

My daylilies have some yellow leaves, while most have remained green. Wonder if I should cut the leaves off?

Grits,
I would love to say the weather here
on the Mississippi coast is better,
but it is not!! Rain and more rain,
Where was all this rain last summer???

I just need one day of sun, to make it till spring! Well thats not true!!

Honeybee

It's rained here for weeks now I think. I love it. My garden guru (he has a Master's degree in horticulture) told me that it's not the cold that kills the grasshoppers, it's the wet. Yea!!!wet! The mud is a test though. They are "moderninzing" my little town, getting ready for Dallas to move up here (there's already rogue cells of urban sprawl just down the road) and are putting in curbs and gutters and driveway openings. They started last spring and were supposed to have the asphalt poured by November first. Didn't happen. Now you drive to the post office or grocery and are very liable to get stuck. It's like the muck pit at Woodstock. If one keeps one's sense of humor, it can be very amusing watching a cattle trailer lose it. They figured out this week that a little gravel goes a long way in making things better. I'm real proud of them.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Is it spring yet? Grits, I would leave the yellow leaves on the daylilies to protect the green leaves in case you get more freezing weather. Minnie, my spring crocus sometimes pop up through the snow here in zone 5. They are brave little things. And soooo welcome. They come up and bloom before the first daffodills and tulips even show a leaf. I need to get one of those heliborus (lenten rose?) plants that blooms in the snow. I wonder how they do that? About now I would love to see some sign of spring. Lots more winter here before that happens. Our high temp was about 10 today. Think spring, think spring, think spring.......

Cape May Court House, NJ(Zone 7a)

The mud and muck here is just lovely too. I did get to see all the twigs and pinecones that were hiding under the snow today and also the plants and bushes my twins have run over with their new quads that santa bought them.(ouch) Guess I will just have to get some new ones to replace them.(oh darn)
