Ideas for the potting bench

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

I was working in the greenhouse today and thought some of you might want to try a couple of my "cheap"ideas.
I keep old mini-blinds and cut them up for plant markers.
write on them with a weatherproof pen and you have a marker that will last all season.
For seed starting,3oz paper bathroom cups work better than anything I have tried.Cut a slit in the bottom for drainage.
A standard plastic flat holds 40 of these. Most of us learned long ago that peat pots do more harm than good.
The paper cups will usually be almost rotten by the time the plant is ready for the garden. This makes it easy to remove the paper without disturbing the roots.

Thanks for the neat ideas! Are you sowing your tomato seeds yet? I just can't wait...Lisa

No tomatoes in yet.I was starting cabbage, collards, lettuce etc. Will probably start the tomatoes in about a week.I did get to clean up and till the garden Saturday. As you can tell,I also can't wait.Peas and potatoes can fo in the garden in about two weeks!!!

Gone2seed, What do you mean peat pots do more harm than good? Just my luck I ordered 200 of them. Never used them before but was going to give them a try. Maybe shouldnt huh? Thank You

vernonmckague by all means go ahead and use the peat pots if you already have them. The problem, for me,has been that they restrict the root growth if left on the seedling.Just remove them before planting out and you should be ok.Peat pots are made of peat(duh!)and that stuff doesn't rot very fast.Of course if you use the paper cups you should remove them before planting as well.

When I used to use peat pots (we all learn the hard way, don't we) I found that if I slit the sides a couple of times they solved the root-lock problem.

For me it was faster and less messy than peeling them off.
