I was just reading that rooting powder last about a year stored in the refrigerator. I've never heard of it getting too old?... & I've never stored it in the fridge. I've had the same jar of rooting powder for years .....
Maybe that's why I have such a terrible time with cuttings. I guess it's time to get a new jar. Does anyone know for sure what the storage life is?
What are your preferred types, brands, and stregnth of rooting hormone? I'd like to find the gel type but I haven't seen it available in the stores around here.
Rooting hormone
Mine is two years old and stuff is still rooting for me. I'm just reading this so next time I'm downstairs, I'll check on the brand name. I did buy the liquid stuff that Cala uses (Schultz, I think), and dip in that too. I probably overdose. Just checked and the powder stuff that's two years old is by Schultz too. It's works fine and I don't refrigerate mine either.

That Shultz stuff is what I've been using and I actually rooted some things!
I've been using the same jar or "Rootone" (purchased from Wal-Mart) for at least 2 years, and my stuff still roots!
I've wanted to move to the liquid rooting hormone that all serious arborists use (I can't remember the name, but it's a 3-letter acronym, if memory serves), but I just haven't gotten around to it. (No need, really. All my cuttings root!)

I'll add: I store my rooting hormone in its original plastic jar on my shelf - no fridge.

Same here. My container of Rootone is older than some of my kids. :) I even rooted four Brugs on accident. LOL
I second that emotion. τΏ- I have a very old bottle of it, and still use it. I also remember a thread some time back that if you ever run out then cinnamon will also work just as well. Haven't tried it yet. I have used willow water tho, and it seems to work extremely well.
Right Shoe,
I have a Aunt in Glasgow who swears by cinnamon;
a). Works every time for her
b). Is 10 times cheaper than rooting hormone
Now THAT'S a good Scottish deal.....
Wintermoor
Hmmm...you know, I was always told I was Scot-Irish. Is that a good combo? I know I'm a miser, so reckon I'll raid the kitchen for some cinnamon!
Cinnamon is also touted as a great anti-fungal agent. :)
Well being a good Scot, after the plant has rooted, you can pull it up, and sprinkle any excess cinnamon on your breakfast toast...... yum!!
Cheap or what??

Dave: IBA is indole-butyric acid, or something like that, lol.
I use a liquid product called Dip n'Grow, I love it, you can vary the strength of your rooting solution depending on hardwood or softwood. I do store this in the refrigerator too. Commercial propogators use Hormodin 1, 2, or 3 depending on the cutting being taken. I have had great luck with dip n'grow.
Since the roundup I use liquid miracle grow rooting. Cala said not to mix as directed but to pour in the cap and use full strength on the vines and brugs. A reminder not to pour whats left back into the bottle because it could contain harmful bacteria. Seems like I have had a lot of luck with this method.
