Rooting heurchura

Hamilton, Canada

Anyone tried rooting this plant with leaf cuttings. I have some potted up. I'm trying a number of plants now from leaf cuttings...begonia iron cross, burgandy leaf begonia and a few others.

Joydie, you might ask Calalily - I know she raises them from seed, and she's pretty handy with vegetative propagation, too :)

Haven't tried a leaf. I know you can cut off the little "plantlets" and root them.

MaVieRose, Cala and go-vols,

Gosh this was just an experiment for we with the leaf cuttings. I just did them like one would do rex begonia leaf cuttings. MaVieRose the second link you posted indicates you can propagate them from leaf cuttings. I'll have to look around and see if I can find any varieties with nice silvery tones for visibility in the evenings.

Off topic but I found Iron Cross Rex begonias 2 for a dollar on clearance at the Farmer's Market here. I got the five plants they had so she gave me the extra plant free. I've started lots of leaf cuttings and I hope they do okay.

Thanks hun.

Thanks MaVieRose for the link:

"Propagation: division when plant center becomes woody (every 3 years or so), leaf cuttings in late fall of leaves and short petiole segment in sand, seeds (500,000 seeds per ounce) sown in spring for following year flowering, tissue culture (mainly of new varieties)"
