After 2 years of waitingcenter variegated leaf brug bloome

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Last year the plant grew great but the buds continually dropped off. The same thing happened in the greenhouse during the winter. It would set buds but they would blast. Still do not know the cause.
Anyway, this is a delightful plant. The flowers have versicolor parentage. What makes the plant so striking is the flower is small and dainty and a wonderful peach color flower with lime green segment lines.
Flower is 12" long, skirt 3 1/2" - 4" wide, tendrils 1", has 2 split calyx. The flower starts out cream and changes to peach with lime green segment lines. As the flower ages the peach color darkens at skirt and gradients to cream at the calyx.
The only problem found with the plant is that it wants to send up some unvariegated shoots from the rootstock. Some of the shoots are variegated and some not. Other than keeping the unvariegated shoots cut back, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to reduce the incidences of them?

Barbara is this the same plant you posted before with the variagated leaves? The flower is rather pretty and I like that lime green stripe. Have your tried rooting the new variagated sports?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

so pretty. and your foliage is so different. reminds me of a diffenbachia.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

I like all of that!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Its beautiful, what causes the variegation or was it breed to do that? Its not one of those things that they say a virus causes the variegation ,is it?like the flowering maples?Or was it a sport off something?

CC, I received a cutting of this from someone named Johnny T. several years ago. I can't remember his last name. How it was developed--I have no idea. Trying some hybridizing with it this year. Used Island Girl--hoping it will set more blooms and bloom more frequently.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Barb, it is absolutely beautiful.

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I love it! And I hope you can get the variegation to breed true.We would all love to see different variegations, and that one is striking!

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

It's lovely - and I must say that you are raising the bar for the rest of us with your documentation and pictures.

Thanks everyone!!!--I cannot take credit for the development of this beauty but want to make it bloom more and have the blooms stronger. Does anyone have any ideas for good crosses for this? I am new to hybridizing and need help from you experienced hybridizers. Should I try a Maya or Peaches and Cream to see what happens to the leaves? The name of the plant is Johnny T (Where are you Johnny T????? I want to thank you and find out your last name so you can get credit for this beauty.

Forgot to say that the plant roots easily.

bump^

Barb,
Eric, Kyle and Monika should be able to answer the hybridizing question...I'n not use but I think it was mentioned that if you try to hybridize plants with the white/cream variagation one will get albino seedlings.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Barb, do you still have this one and did you get it crossed with good results?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I had forgotten all about this one. It is so different looking.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Can you tell that I have nothing to do this morning. Well, the usual, but it is too cold to work outside. I just liked the looks of the foliage on this one and wondered how it was doing.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

That is unusual foliage. Thanks for bringing it up again, it's new to me.

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Did some crosses with it but it is bad to drop buds and not take make seed pods. Tried again this year and will see. Have a U. Conn Treasures with the same variegation. It developed as a sport. No blooms on that stem yet so will have to make cuttings and wait until next year on it.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Do not toss it if it doesn't work Barb, but send to other climates to see if it can be a happy little brug. That is an order...........LOL!

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

Kell- I wouldn't dare throw it away. Frannie has a start. When I cut it back, do you want to try it?

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Barbara, I would pollinate it with x candida.

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

Barbara,

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)
