Hello,
My 10 yr old son is taking a Jr. Master Gardener class.
He is suppose to design a theme garden for a 5' x 10' plot.
He was suppose to have a partner, but unfortunately the one he was assigned dropped out of the class.
Does anyone have any good ideas for a "theme" or know of a site where he could go look at some garden plans? So far we've come up with a "salad bowl" garden or a "red garden"
I think he was hoping to think of something a little more "fun" and "exciting". If I could help him come up with a good idea, it mite soften the blow of losing his partner.
I forgot to add that it has to be a garden of annuals as they plow it under and use the plots again for next years class.

Help for my son taking a Junior Master Gardener class
yep. How about a rainbow garden? Instead of it being exactly rectangle make it a 5 X 10 semi-circle...(or stretch it out and make it 2 X 25, same amount of square footage)...then, starting at one end plant the colors of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet can be any shade of purple)...these things can consist of anything from flowers to veggies. I bet it'd be the star of the show! (OR!, if you like, how about a Butterfly garden...plant everything he can find that attracts butterflies...then you'd not only have colorful flowers but also "live" flowers that move from plant to plant..."flutter-bys").
Hi Tree_Climber:
Sounds like that's a great class for children to learn the ins and outs of gardening. Something that can be pretty as well as useful could be an edible flower garden. Included in it can be sunflowers, okra, borage, nasturtium just to mention a few. These plants can be enjoyed for their blooms as well as their nutritional value!
Good luck.

How about a garden of littles-little orange and white pumpkins, small ears of popcorn, the small eggplants-that look like eggs, tiny carrots, the multi-colored radishes, little tomatos (maybe the green ones)?
Tree_Climber...After thinking about what I would enjoy if I was 10 years old, I would suggest a Star Trek/Alien garden. I know I am completely out of my realm here because I am a newbie to gardening; but I would plant such things as turtle heads, eyeball plants, star asters, and etc. I'd also get a ceramic close in shape to a space ship, put a hose attachment in the rear and add small holes in the greenware before firing to water the garden. If you don't want to do the water thing, I'd use red blinking lights in the space ship. Just a thought.
