Sick Maple

Avis, PA(Zone 6a)

I have two maple trees in my backyard about 20 feet apart and about 3 stories in height. The problem is that the one on the outside of the fence starts to lose its leaves about the middle of July every year. They just turn brown and fall off. They don't all go, about 1/4 quarter of them fall. I have been unable to spot any infestation, they both get plenty of water, and the one on the inside of the fence doesn't lose it's leaves. Any ideas on what's going on with this maple? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I have an idea. Are both of the maples the same type? Different types of maples loose their leaves at diff. times. Could this be the problem?

Hi Honibee,
They are both the same kinds of maples.Besides I don't believe any maple looses it leaves in the middle of July. Baa suggested that the sick one may be getting wind burned but its not the one to the east of the good maple. We get most of our wind from the west. So I don't think its wind burn either. Thanks for the thought though...if you have any more ideas let me know.

Have a tree doctor check the tree mine did the same thing and we found out it had carpenter ants, they were eating it from the inside out, needless to say the tree had to go. There was a split high up in the tree and thats where they got in. I sure miss that tree but the new one is growing great.

Hi Annabelle15,
Hmmm...interesting idea. We do have carpenter ants around. They invade my house every spring. I will take your suggestion and have a tree doctor look at it.
Thanks,
