Cold Frame Temp

Cobleskill, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi I am not sure where to post this. So much has changed since I was last here. Great Job Dave!!! I am currently finishing up a coldframe: 6'x3'x3', and am waiting for my min/max themometer to come in the mail. I never did this before and it is practice for my greenhouse. What are good temps for my coldframe. I have only found soil temps, not air temps. Also, if anyone has any tips or past experiences it would be appreciated. Thanks!!

Hi Meghan, different plants respond to different air temps. That may be why you are having trouble finding something. While houseplants do best under 70-80*, flowering plants do best at lower temps, say around 60*. Have you tried contacting your local extension service? They have tons of info. on different plants. And how to make and maintain cold frames. All the info. is free. It is a great source of info. Hope this helps! Bye, Lisa

Check out Eliot Coleman's "Four Season Harvest." He has chapters worth of info about using cold frames and extending the seasons with them.

If you search for Eliot Coleman at www.abe.com, you can find his book for under $10. Sure, it's used, but Amazon's price is too rich for my gardener's blood. :o)

Just thought I'd share!
