Passiflora

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a miniature Passiflora Citrina and I want to propagate it. What is the best way...besides banannas? The regualr sized passiflora are almost invasive here but this little one is just too cute! Also I have trained the mini on a copper tubing circle I made and it is almost full...can I just trim it? By trimming, will it affect the blooming? Bloom in photo is just a little over an inch wide!
Thanks!

Very pretty!

So pretty!! If I tell you how to start it, will you start me a piece? Just kidding.
Tim is better at this than I am, but here's what I do. I take cuttings about 6 inches long from the tips. Dip in Shultz root starter, stick in vermiculite or sand or a mix of those. (I use a cut off 20oz Coke bottle with a teeny hole in the bottom for a container and that way you can see the roots.) Takes from 2 to 6 weeks to root. Now is a good time to take cuttings. Oh yeah, put them in the shade, not in the hot sun and keep them moist.

Thank you Cala....if I'm successful, I'll send you one! Now, what will happen where I make the cutting? Will it then branch off? Thanks again!

Yes, it will branch. You will usually get one from the end node and sometimes it will branch from all the nodes, so you get lots of branches.

I take my cuttings from the side branches. I strip off a couple of the bottom leaves and put them in a cup of water. I've rooted tons of cuttings from my passiflora like this. They will root within a week or less. I currently have over 30 cuttings rooting. I started with 4 varieties of just one single plant each and now have baskets full of passiflora vines. I have them trained to climb up obelisk and the foetida now has lots of big flowe buds.

I will be able to corral the mini but there is no harnessing the large varieties here...it would be a constant battle! A friend planted several on a fence going against everyone's advice. Then she didn't keep at them. Wel, within 2 years, her fence collapsed! In my beginning days here in Florida I planted one at the base of an oak tree. Within a year it was almost to the top of this large tree! I eventuall cut the vine down but years later, I still see blooms high in the tree. I have some Cala's way, I shall try water and I can't believe it...I bought a banana at the store yesterday and shall try the banana method!

Dale,
This one is on the easy to propagate list. I recently took several cuttings to root, no rooting hormone and had about 70% rooted. The bad part is only one survived the move so far, and it's in bad shape. Leaving freshly rooted cuttings in a moving truck for 2-3 days is not a good idea!!

If I take cuttings now, will they survive as houseplants though the winter? I have some blooming and love them. (Got some cuttings from Janet) and would love to be able to keep some for next year. Thanks, Lou

Dispatcher, yes, they should survive. Put them in a bright window before frost arrives and don't overwater. I keep all my passifloras in the greenhouse for the winter.

Thanks, Calalily! I sure intend to try to keep some.
