Mandavilla

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Does anyone know if you can root cuttings from mandavilla? If so, is there any special way . I bought two and they are beautiful and I would like to try to save them or cutting for next year. Will they live as a houseplant ? Thanks, Lou

Lou, I bring mine into the greenhouse, but used to just keep them in the garage. They will go sort of dormant. I would trim them to 3 feet long, bring the pot into the garage, keep barely moist(not bone dry or they will die) and in March they should start putting out new green leaves. Oh yeah, the leaves will fall off when you bring them into the garage, don't worry though, they will grow again in the spring.
I go to a greenhouse that propigates them by the thousands(maybe millions) and she takes cuttings now, trims the tip out, leaves 2 nodes on the stem, cuts the leaves that are left in half, sticks in vermiculite and puts on a heated mist bench.

Wow, I love this site!
I bought my first M.vine this Spring,
and was wondering the very same thing as Lou!
Cala, thanks so much for the over-wintering/propagation tips,
you're wonderful! :-)

CC, dang it, wish I'd known you didn't have one. We are selling the 3 gallon pots for $15. We had some left over and marked them down.

Id rather send you the 15 bucks .....

Do you really want one of the big ones? Wonder if I could ship it UPS?

Cala, How cold did it get in your garage? I am in zone 5, and my garage is under the bedroom. It does get down to zero, i suppose that is too cold. The basement is heated. Do you think they would like to sit in a basement window or would it be better if I just kept them away from sunlight? Or just treat them like houseplants? They can stay out til mid Oct. but want to plan ahead and make room! Doris

I think I have managed to propagate my lavender mandevilla successfully, so far, anyway. I thought I'd lost it, because it's stem turned brown, and the leaves looked like they were dying. When I went to pull off the dead leaves, there were two itty-bitty little baby leaves underneath. They were growing out of what looked like dead wood stem??!! And it seems to be taking forever. I'm sure that I started this cutting some 3 weeks ago (I've begun dating them now). I used to (literally) pinch the ends...was I supposed to just cut it off?? Is that what they mean by pinching?? I did the whole root hormone and vermiculite thing...but do they normally take forever and ever? Calla, I'm going to try to add the recent pics of my lavender mandevilla and it's baby clone to the plant ID forum entry I've already begun (I'm not sure it's even a mandevilla, actually). Will you look at it and see if it looks promising??? I just began 10 more, but I still feel like I need some reassurance somehow...Oh, and have you guys ever seen a mandevilla grow a pod or fruit-like thingy? (Check the pic...it's very weird!!!)

djm,
They would need to go into the heated basement.

I lost my purple mandevilla cuttings, which turned out to be allamanda, or india rubber vine, by the way. None of the other ones are working for me either, darn it! Cala, what should you do if you don't have a heated misting bench? I want to grow more of my chileans and alice du ponts soooooo badly!!!
