*Notes* for Propagation Method (Baa's)

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

Please tell all of us the experiences you are having using this method. Plant names, any insects, anything at all. Chiquita, Del Monte, or Dole?:) We just might come up with better propagation methods for many plants that have been difficult at best.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

I am starting Coleus, Lantana, Salvia, and Verbena. All plants I hope to overwinter, as they are difficult to find or expensive. The yellow sticky paper is in place, and an order has been placed for more. Now to sit back and watch.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Today I planted Clerodendrum Ugandense and Tropical hibiscus in a banana and what a fun idea.
Golddog, Lantana is taking over my yard. If you want some this fall or next spring, just let me know.

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

weeds, I would love some next year. The local nurseries don't have much selection, and I don't see much in the seed calogues either.

Thanks, I'll make a note on the computer.

Golddog, if you remind me I can send you some seeds, I've got all colors. Seeds are really easy and they bloom in a few months.(the seeds are still green now, but you can email me and I'll save the email) I don't even peel the seeds, just dry them, plant in Jan/Feb. I put potting soil in the pot to within a half inch of the top. Sow the seeds, cover with fine milled vermiculite, keep moist and warm and they come up fast.

I got my banana today and I'm going to try some coleus tomorrow.

Baa's late .. I am going to do this I've just been all over the place this week and still no banana! Will try hard to get one by Saturday. I want to try African Violet, Scutellaria alpina, Begonia sutherlandii and a couple of others.

Will report back with banana soon :)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

My banana has turned brown on one end and that plant, Clerodendrum, has wilted. I think I had it in too much sun.
Will divide into 3 sections and pot them up this weekend.

OK nana's were dutifully planted with

Crassula
Kalanchoe
African Violet
Sinningia

The succulents are doing fine ... the African Violet and Sinningia look like they're struggling but haven't succumbed to anything yet :)

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Mine are now potted in soil (left the banana on and just cut it into thirds) and will see what happens. Looks like one Hibiscus might make it.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Uh oh, 2 dead as a doornail, one hibiscus is still hanging in there.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Here's how I root lantana. I have given away about 20 this year and I think I sent some to weeds last year. I use peat moss and sand about 60-40. I take a cutting from new growth and dip in liquid starter and take the pot and place in a tray of water. It takes only a short time to root and I have one now that is blooming in a 3in. pot that I rooted recently. I have others that I have scattered through my yard that I started this way. I do keep in a part shade.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

GaRedClay,
Haven't heard from you in awhile! Try those Lantana in a Banana just to see if it works.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

GRC...do you water the pot when you plant the cutting, or merely set the pot in a tray with water? And do you keep the tray watered, not water the pot? Can you use any sand (I keep hearing the term sterile sand and don't know what the dif is...I have a pile of sand I use to mix concrete-will that work?)
Weeds...what are you guys talking about, Lantana in a Banana?
Cala...been meaning to ask you: how come my potted soil never seems to dry out? sometimes even the vermiculite starts getting green. It seems my cuttings always die in the pots, but do well in the ground. I don't get it.
Goldog...I have deep purple salvia I couldn't kill if I wanted to, if you want pieces of it. I dug some up to move them and I guess left part of the root where the old plant was, and keep getting more where I didn't want it anymore. I'll email you a pic later today, and if you want some, I'll send you what I can dig up. Don't worry if they don't look healthy, just put it in the ground and water.
I have three different kinds of Lantana, and one of them is absolutely gorgeous if I can root...it's dark red, dark orange, and deep yellow-I haven't seen it anywhere else. It's going through a little stress being re-planted right now, but I'm sure it'll be okay soon; I planted the others first, and they're growing and blooming like mad.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

meiyu,
We are experimenting with baa's unique way of propagating...at least a way she read about.
Lantana in a banana, yes that is it!

If you have any red lantana to spare I would love some, I have the other kind but no red. Just seeds would do! They grow great from seeds around here.
Maybe I have something you want even though my seed selection is limited so far.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Hey Weeds I'll get some for you.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

i'll let you know as soon as it makes some...there are blooms coming, but it was stressed and just getting over it. sounds like GRC's gotcha covered though!! anything else you wanna give away GRC?? hehehe...i may need some myself, if mine doesn't pull through, it's sooooo pretty!!!

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

GRC, sounds great, I love anything with red blooms!

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

I posted a photo for ya'll.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

where, georgiaredclay?

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Here it is meiyu.http://davesgarden.com/s/338776.html

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

I think mine are redder, but it may be the pic. seems i remember more red? are there different ones? i also have one that's hot pink outside and then neon orange with bright yellow center. i love that one too.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Well we'll have to trade some seeds.
I tried the banana today. They wilted so bad. I will keep a check and see how they do.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

grc, do you just pic them off when they turn black? why is everyone doing the banana thing? i don't get it. can't you put in potting soil? if they like potassium, you could just cut up banana peel and plant it with the plant in the pot or ground? that's what i do to my roses, and it works perfectly.
meiyu

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

meiyu, this is an experiment. See the link below, we are just trying something for fun.

http://davesgarden.com/s/318043.html

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

Yes I pick them when they are black. Weeds I picked some today for you. I need your address.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Okie Dokie GRC

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

weeds, that's pretty wild. but, i don't understand why you couldn't just put the sliced banana with the cutting straight into the pot or ground and go from there. do other plants like banana food too? i only know i read to feed it to my roses, and i only use the skins. is the fruit better than the skin, or is it just because it's being used to root that you are using the fruit?

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

meiyu,
I have no idea, it is just an experiment. We will let you know what happens.

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

okie-dokie! thanks!

Meiyu

I just thought it would be an interesting and easy experiment for us to try out. I'm sure you could put the cutting in the banana slice and pot it up immediately but the current idea is to put the cutting into the bananas and pot up later

san antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

hmmmm...interesting. i'd like to see what happens!
