It finally got cool enough here to cross some brugs...has been so hot the pollen was no good and the flowers weren't receptive....the nights now are in the 60's and sometimes 50's so here I go with my paint brush and labels.
Time to cross brugs.
Good luck with your pollinating Kyle. I'm sure you will come up with some more winners.
:-) Tanx!
I've been pollinating this week too, though we aren't nearly as cool as you guys. Hope to get something good. Hope you do too!!
Keep going you guys, you are on a "roll". Get us some pink doubles! Or peach or.....
purple?
i've only had critters pollinate 12-14 pods all this year, and boy do i have them. came inside tonight with a green cat crawling up my shirt. 50s at night sound good, was 78 here last night at 9 o'clock. i hope you all get your favorites crosses made.
hey guys, I am pollinating like crazy even though I have not a clue! Please wish me beginner's luck!
It has been too hot here for much pollinating but I have managed to get a couple of pods set on Pink Beauty/Rosamund using Salmon Pink as pollen donor on one and JP on the other.I'm hoping for some nice blooms from these next summer.Too late now for this year..
Also have Eric's XVDP crossed to Isabella. Both of these should give us something interesting.
I pollinated my x knightii with EP but the buds fell off and the same thing happened to candida flora plena aka Logees species. There doesn't seem to be very good pollen in the double whites at the moment. Hoping for better pollen soon. Oh dear.
Got some nice seed pods forming on the sanguineas though.
g2s, what is XVDP?
Too hot here!! Nothing pollinated - not even by critters.
have two pods on Shirleys Peach, and thinking they must have stayed on from arlenes house, one on ek1 X aurea orange, several on solid gold and frosty pink type crossed by moths. Pods fell off of double white, it's so hot here.
tig, seems like i remember those pods. it had a v cuba next to it blooming. the pod off the white that you and azalea shared is almost ready (FP X DS or vice versa?). my sis was asking me about a seed pod on one i gave her, and a neighbor about a seedpod on an isabella i gave them. the aurea seeds seem to grow slower than the others.
found a couple on whiskers, it's too tall for me to get to the blooms, so these are moth gifts.
Arlene....I guess XVDP is Eric's code for a cross. You sent me this one. It's supposed to be dark peach but the first blooms were very light.Hoping for deeper color when it blooms again.
I only have one pod- the one that was left on the Vally G. White - hope it stays on. I now have 5 big blooms open on that Isabella - maybe I will try to pollinate them today - never did it before.
JT, that is likely what he ended up naming Dr. D. it's very much like spring peach, which i had called vpx, but darker peach.
Kyle, good luck with your venture, I am sure you will come up with some dooozies.....
Arlene, seems like the critters have been doing you a favor, but maybe not the crosses you want...
The brug society is busy with paintbrush in hand doing all sorts of things in the hopes of getting that perfect and new hybrid......
We are all just awaiting with bated breath to see what wonders will come from these efforts.....
flore plena Velvet Lady x EP, Velvet Lady x EPxRK, Rothkirch x Charleston, Rothkirch x Apricot Queen, Charleston x EPxRK, Velvet Lady x Flamenco, Charleston x Ocre, Grazie x Maya, Maya x Grazie, Velvet Lady x Ludgers aurea Gold. Kornett, Rothkirch x White Pearl
Pebble, i'm gonna start trying to cross again. most of the seeds i'm sure i'll like, just cause i like the mama!
It was theory first.... the praxis will prove if I made some smart crosses Jeanne, LOL!
Just the names of your crosses makes me hold my breath.
Me too, holding my breath! I don't even have the ones Monika said she crossed.
Eclipse, good to hear, that your climate finally seem to cooperate. I wish you luck with your crosses. I had these climate problems too. I made close to 70 crosses. 15 of them has growing pods, 14 didn`t take the pollen or pollen was bad and 41 is so new, that I don`t know, which will stay on and which will fall. Ocre x versi. Apricot Queen and Hofwil x Ocre was eaten by butterfly catapillars. They are a real pest here. *lol*

Holy Cow!!!
Dang Tonny!! Why do I bother to make anymore crosses after all of yours!! LOL :-)
That boggles the mind - just what have I been doing with my time??
No wonder we go for days without hearing from you Tonny. You're like a mad scientist out there with your brugs.
Have you updated your website lately - not the hybridizer one, your personal dat/brug site??
Tonny, can we put in orders now?lol
Azela, half of them would probably fall of and have to be re-made, if there still is open flowers at that time.
Kyle, if lucky there will be a few hybrids good enough as they are. Maybe also some, which needs improvements, but the rest will probably fail to be any good. I wish, that I could make them just half as good as your hybrids (both old and new ones). That`s why you have to bother, or else I won`t have any ideals to strive for. *lol*
Liz, you probably use your time the way, that I had hoped to use mine: to enjoy the Brugs and enjoy them again. *lol* Sometimes I forget that, but I must admit, that I only look as a mad scientist, when I hunt catapillars in the flower parts. *lol* Then I wish I knew a magick plant or an agent, that would repel them and send them back in the woods or just down to the Brug leaves. *lol*
Arlene, I would be very happy, if you and also the rest of the Brug gang would help me growing these crosses out. It will take me a million years to do it alone. You can all keep the seedlings you want, as long as I can beg a cutting from the few lucky ones. *lol* *lol*
I have A pod, what is it,I dunno......I found out we have a hummingbird moth,I think he was the match maker, cause I didn't cross my white to anything....but there is a large pod........kinda pitiful next to Tonny,Eric,Monika,Susie,Arlene...etc.......
CC, please post a picture. I like to see your pod. It is my first year crossing Brugs. so I can`t say much about it, but you never know, what secrets your pod hide. When I grew only Daturas bees mixed some of the most wonderful hybrids. One of them was a wrightii x meteloides cross with close to 29 cm long and very broad flowers. I had hoped, that bees would also cross some of the Brugs, but they still seem to prefer the Daturas. I also grow seedlings from Eric`s versicolors mixed by bees and moths and also quite a few from Larry. I cross my fingers, that your cross will throw out a few beauties.
I should have time to take some pictures this weekend. There is also a pod(small)on my pink that is the momma of the seedings that calla and some others have .That was crossed to my yellow/orange un named, calla thought it might be CG when she saw it.
The white pod is getting big,I don't know how long its been there.there were 3 others blooming at the same time, but the closest to it was Isabella.
Tonny, your list is amazing. I'm so small scale here that I could almost remember what was crossed to what without tags, but I did tag them. I hope you have great luck and I would love to try anything that has Hofwil in it. You know me and my Hofwil. Would help you out with any you need grown as long as it isn't a ton of them. Hope all your crosses make it. That would be a lot of seed.
Tonny, I'd love to grow a few of your seeds. am getting limited on what I can grow anymore, but would love to include of few of yours.
Oh my!! The names on Tonny's and Monika's crosses is a Brug growers dream come true.
PICK ME PICK ME Tonny!!! PICK ME!!
What fun!! I need some dark pink to grow that preferable will be dark pink doubles LOL!!!
Everyone just remember to keep written records of your crosses....and tag all flowers when you cross them with the pollen parents info. This is critical to future breeding. we need to know history and parentage of all these new hybrids.
Tonny, I would also love to help you out in growing some of your seeds.
