My first propagation

Ok so it's only impatience but for this novice gardener I think I did pretty good. I bought these last year, and then took cuttings. This is so cool. Now if only I could do this with ALL my plants.

How did you start the cuttings? I tried to start New Guinee(sp) impatience, large ones, had no luck in water, perlite, potting soil.

You did a good job.

Those are so pretty.

proud of you! that looks great.

Thank you Yardbird, Hibiscus, and tiG. :-) You know, it's people like you all teaching me. What would I do without you. Hibiscus, I thought I answered you but I see it's not here. Geez, I must be losing it. Anyway, all I did was take stem cuttings, remove all the lower leaves and buds if they had them, dipped them rooting hormone, and put them in regular growing medium. Put the whole flat in a plastic bag and made sure it kept moist. It was mostly in full shade. I'm sure this was more luck than sense.

Vic
isn't it a ball to see your cuttings take off.
I got into doing it this year and am having a ball.

Yeah Vic! See you can do it !!! I am so proud of you. That's only the beginning. You will be doing cuttings of everything now.

Vic, thanks for help, don't know if mine was a hard one to start or what? I usually can get almost anything started, but not the New Guinee.

mystic's got that right, once you get some started, you try EVERYTHING!!! I can't seem to get just one plant, gotta' see if I can make another one, for backup.

The trick with the New Guineas is to take as small a tip cutting as possible. Use only the very tip of the plants, strip off the bottom leaves, apply root-tone and put in either perlite or potting soil, apply bottom heat and humidity. They are tricky, but this will help!

Very good job Vic!!
For the NG impatiens, use rockwool cubes or oasis cubes and mist regularly(several times a day). Bottom heat is good like Studley said, and yes, the cuttings must be teeny. I used to be allowed to watch them take cuttings at the greenhouse I worked at(they wouldn't let me help, I'd killed too many) I remember that the guy who did them said they were a bit tricky to root.
