If you have a burning need to know, there are cool reasons for why things smell so awesome after the rain and why things suddenly green up after a thunderstorm. I found the answers to these and other burning questions and thought some of ya might like to know!
About those wonderful rain smells, from Answersthatwork.com:

About thunderstorms and nitrogen, from the University of Arizona:

Pretty cool stuff!
Why it smells good after rain...Why T-storms make things green
Hi Gardenwife,
It's funny you should post that link about thunderstorms and nitrogen. I just read an article in Fine Gardening about that very subject. Just wouldn't what to get hit by that lightening though. LOL!
Sharon
Maybe it'd make your hair green like some of those poor poolbunnies' hair looks after a bad bleach job and chlorine mix! LOL~
Neat site. Thanks
Gardenwife , The reason I know it smells great here is it gets the Creosote Bush and the smell,is wonderful clean herbal smell! Ahh the desert in the rain!
I remember My Mother-in-Law who lived in Pa. told me over 30 years ago about the nitroen in the rain water, she also said that in winters when there was the most snow, the veggies grew better. - a wise lady.
She also warned me not to kill the ants on the peony bushes because she beleived they would not open without them She thought the ants ate part of the green covering on the buds so that they could open. This one is debatable.
Azalea - I loved that tip on the U of Arizona site (first post in thread) regarding saving rainwater and using it for drip irrigation. And the peony/ant things's always been a fun mystery, hasn't it? :o)
Yes, a mystery, I did hear somewhere a long time ago tho that there is something to the ant thing, don't remember what it was, I was surprised. It's not because they eat the edges, but something else. When I was young and foolish I didn't believe some of the tales she told me but now I can appreciate her wisdom an many things. She only had an 8th grade education but very smart, she has been gone now 12 years and I miss her.
