Purchased a hanging basket of Million bells terra Cotta today...got it home and removed wrapping to find lots of broken vines and stems. How can I propogate these? In water or sterile potting soil? Anyone have any ideas that would help me out. I hate throwing these cuttings in the trash. Last year I was successful in rooting roses using the Zip Lock Baggie Method and sterile potting soil...was wandering if this technique would work for the Million Bells too? Any ideas out here? Thanks, Kathy.

Kathy, I would think they're similar to petunias, and from a brief internet search, it looks like you can propagate petunia cuttings with a little rooting hormone and sterile, soil-less mix. If they broke off, give them a fresh, clean cut before you dip them in the rooting hormone, and they should put out roots in a week or so. Good luck! Just don't try to sell those cuttings, unless you want the patent police to come comfiscate your crop! (Just kidding, but only half - as I understand it, Million Bells are patent protected; hence no seeds for sale on a retail basis, and the plants are available in certain retail centers.)

As long as you are doing it for your own home use, no law is broken from what I understand of the patent law. Take the cuttings down to about 3 or 4 inches long, stick in sterile potting mix, water in with a fungicide and root in a warm, bright place (not in the hot sun). I use a heating pad set at 72 degrees F. They take at least 2 weeks or longer to root.
