Professional gardner new to Brugs

Kalispell, MT

I am a Northern gardner and would appreciate feedback from other Brug growers in cold climates. I have lusted after Brugs for years! I just returned from California with four 5 gallon size plants -2 Frosty Pink, Charles Grimwald (covered with big fat buds!), and one marked Double white. I am planning on putting them into 25 gallon tree pots and leaving them outside for the summer. There is space in a cool greenhouse for the winter. Anything else to pay attention to?

I manage two large public gardens here in Western Montana. One is an old mansion, circa 1895. The grounds need restoration, a long project. I want to have Brugs over there for summer display- they would look fabulous in that setting!

Hamilton, Canada

First, welcome and second-Happy 4th of July!! I love old buildings circa 1890's. They have such wonderful architecture. I'm sure the restoration garden project will take some time to complete and a lot of hard work. There are many plants available that would fit that era such as older types of tulipa and daffodils which are minatures from that century.

Of course during that era, gardeners lusted for rare and unusual plants and brugmansia would be wonderful in that setting. Let me warn you, once you buy a brugmansia you will always want MORE!!

You will enjoy the forum here and there is always tons of information posted. Good luck on your garden restoration project.

Welcome weedwoman - there is another member here doing the same thing - only in California. An enormous undertaking I'm sure returning a garden to it's old glory.

Welcome. Brugs like lots and lots of food, they don't like windy spots and the bugs love them. But they're so beautiful, they're worth all the fuss. Have fun.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi . . I'm Frannie. What an exciting project that you have. Welcome to the brug forum where all your questions can be answered. There are plenty of experienced growers here.

Hi Weedwoman,

I'm Shirley sending a big Welcome from Iowa. Sounds like you have your hands full with your restoration project of the grounds. Hope you have lots of fun and will post a picture or two, especially of the before and after type. Brugs will help make it beautiful.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Weedwoman, welcome to the Brug forum where you can find a world of information from experienced Brug growers.Sounds like you've got your work cut out for you with two public gardens to tend to.

Welcome Weedwoman,
I'm in the deep south but we do have a few cold weather birds here and I'm sure they will give you all the info you need.

Weedwoman,
Living in Florida means that our climate is too warm for many Brug hybrids. Namely, sanguinea, vulcanicola, and arborea type hybrids....I have to admit though, I have place numerous arborea hybrids around my yard this year in full sun and in shade. Only two of which have made it through the hot summer...both are B.arborea Ida's and both were placed where they get a few hours shade each day.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Hi weedwoman! I am in Idaho but this is my first year with brugs. I have them in 35 gallon pots on my patio and can hardly wait till they bloom. I don't have a greenhouse but will winter them in my bedroom next to my sliding glass door. Yes the bugs really like them, they tear in the wind and they don't like puppies playing in their dirt :<( Good luck with Brugs in my DH and my home state! He grew up in Conrad and I in Anaconda. He went to college at Flathead Valley Community College there in Kalispell. I know you will enjoy these people at DG I do. :>) Lani

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Weedwoman. I hope you love it here! Wait till you see all the brug pictures! Where in California did you find your brugs?

Ponditis.........
What kind of pot is 35 gallon? That is the size of a garbage can. I was thinking of using garbage cans as I can only find the black growers pots less than half that size and i can already tell they are too small. But I would never be able to move it once potted up!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Welcome Weedwoman for Debbie in Michigan. Dave's and the people here are the greatest. You can learn so much from many of them. I have my brugs in pots and will bring them in this fall. Please do post pictures of before, during and after if possible. It would be great to see.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hi weedwoman. Feed them, water them and enjoy them!! I have them in the ground, in pots of all sizes, in sun and shade.
Hope you'll feel at home here.

kell, call around to landscapers and follow them to where they are putting in big trees. They'll almost always let you have the pots. I have a friend that is going to get me some very very large ones that way.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

tiG............how smart of you!
thanks

Weedwoman, welcome from Monika in Germany.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Kell, I got my pots from a local greenhouse supplier. They were about $40 for 10 pots. And I should have said that I will bring in cuttings to winter over. I can't move those pots at all. I am putting up a windbreak as they don't like this hot dry wind here.

Panhandle, FL(Zone 8a)

Welcome Weedwoman - I was in Kalispell 2 summers ago on a trip through that area. It is absolutely beautiful. Good luck with the Brugs.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

How nicely put Pebble!!!

Gulfport, MS(Zone 8a)

Welcome, Weedwoman. I'm Roz from the deep south. You will just love brugs and this site, too.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Hey Kell, I was in your neck of the woods this weekend, it was lovely...

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Oh right pebble.............Dublin right? Did you see any big brugs in peoples' gardens? Was the weather as nice as you had hoped? Unfortunately, I was fresh on a thread yesterday telling all of those that lived in the hot, humid climates to eat their heart out over my great weather. God must have heard and decided to teach me a lesson, the temperature was a record high today..........in the 90s, humidity in the 60s.........but thank god it is dropping fast and will be in the 50s tonight. I HATE the heat! It will be hot again tomorrow!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kell, how would you like to live in that stuff day in and day out. Nights never go below about 72 now and the humidity is unreal. So heavy you can see it in the air. Sure good for the brugs though because the spider mites don't like it humid.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Shirley, I could NEVER live in such a place. I grew up in New Jersey but have lived here for almost 30 years. Life is too short to be miserable all the time. Here most days you actually comment on how glorius a day it is and really enjoy it. It adds such joy and enjoyment to every day life!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Welcome Weedwoman. I'm a neighbor to the east. I'm in western North Dakota. This is my first year with brugs too. I have mine in 5 gallon pots and I will be bringing them inside this winter. Mine are still fairly small and some are started from seeds and some from cuttings that everyone was so generous and kind to share with me.

Kalispell huh? I think we are still about 600 or so miles apart, but maybe someday we will get a chance to meet. How far is Kalispell from Billings?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Kell, the weather was splendid while we were there.
Yes, we were in dublin, but did a fair amount of flitting around in the Bay area. Went to Sausolito for the 4th, watched the fireworks there, then watched the ones being set off in San Francisco, they were being set off simultaeneously by the Bay bridge and Golden Gate bridge. It was quite the spectacle.
I did not see any brugs, I really didnt have much time to just go out and enjoy people's gardens though....
We had dinner at a place in half moon bay that had a lovely shrub out front, fuzzy leaves, with fuzzy red and purple flowers, I took a cutting, I dont know if it will make it though....

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Pebble......I love Half Moon Bay! Lots of nurseries over there. There used to be a CG brug that I would visit that must have been 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide. It was the most amazing vision! An incredible thrill to see. It died in the big freeze a few years ago, I was devastated. Also if you go up a few miles from there, you can buy fresh fish right off the docks. I think I will go buy salmon there this weekend.......YUM YUM
Glad you had such a great trip.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Kell, for Salmon, you need to come up this way :)
and then stop by and we can barbeque it.....While we browse thru my gardens.....
Are you caught in this heat wave? we had 97 yesterday, and supposed to get hotter today.....egads!!!!
It even got into the high 80's on the coast, which is so very unusual.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I just love salmon though after I found out where and what made the cheap fresh salmon sold in the grocery stores I stopped eating it. It was too gross a story. Now I will only eat wild caught. It is going to be near or over 100 degrees today. I will come home for lunch to mist all my plants. It was horrible yesterday! I dread the heat. I will also need to be misted!

Kelley,
I have lived in Ms, Al, Md, Europe, Co, In, Tx, Korea and Co again and there is no place like home. We fuss and complain about the humidity but we really do like it here.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

You must work fairly close to your home, as do I (4 minutes) and I often go home for lunch just to see how my plants are doing. It's a time when I can sit in the backyard and relax, even if it is for just an hour. I dont feel pressured to start weeding or anything like that...
It might just reach the 100's here too.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Glory you sound like Dorothy..........LOL. I live about 10 minutes away from work Pebble. To where I am heading to now.................. see you all later!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

have a good day Kell

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wonder what happened to weedwomen. She hasn't posted since she started this thread.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I was wondering the same thing, considering the thread has taken turn of it's own.

Weedwoman, where are you?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

And this is the only thread, she's ever posted!! Hope she wasn't involved in any of the fires out that way!!!

"eyes"

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

She probably was left speechless by the combined wisdom of all of us!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

lol Kell....You just never know.....

She more then likely thought we were all nuts!!!! LOL

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I'm inclined to agree with you Glory. But we're a lovable bunch of nuts....
