Kalmia or mountain laurel

Lenjo Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a) Jun 30, 2002

I have had two of these shrubs and killed them both. Rhodies and azaleas do great here in zone 8 in Oregon and they say kalmia is similar. They are so pretty and would like to try again. They are not native here, what has been your experience with these? What newer varieties do not grow to be so big?
