Propagation: Is there HOPE in a passiflora ROOT?

Carbondale, IL(Zone 6a)

I finally gave up on my passiflora caerulea and started digging up the rotted mess that it turned into. There was one section, though that didn't seem brittle or mushy. I was wondering if I can bring this thing back from the dead by just the root...anyone out there have any suggestions? This is my last hope of growing this type of vine for this season. Right now in it's sitting in water by a window, probably the last thing it needs, but I'm desperate! I'm going to try to save my p. foetdia the same way, or a better way if any of you have any suggestions. I really, really want to grow these vines! Any help would just make my summer:))!!!

Keep the roots under soil, moist but not wet, and give them as much sun as possible.
Today I dug up a P. caerulea that came up from a chunk of root I buried a few weeks ago. Also I found a bunch of P. foetida growing from roots left over from the removal of a stock plant recently. P. x belotii also sends up suckers from runners.
