Well, I wasn't sent to Disney, but I got a friendly reminder for the faux pas I made. I posted , at GW, the same request as I did here for favorite gardening tips. I wanted them for an article (ends up it's going to be 2 articles) I'm writing for the local paper. I was told I had posted it in an inappropriate forum, and should not have used one essentially for trading. Well, I knew the trading forums were where the majority of people went, so I posted there.
Perhaps I should give up on GW altogether.
friendly reminder
We live and learn :-) Meantime, here's another for you.
Planting last year's seeds Who isn't guilty of ordering more seeds than you plant? But are these left-over seeds still good? Test them for viability before planting by sprinkling several seeds onto a moist paper towel. Roll up the towel and keep it in a warm place for several days (the top of the refrigerator is a good place). Then, based on the expected germination period for the type of seed, see what your germination ratio is. Do less than half the seeds sprout? If so, don't risk planting these seeds. Buy new!
I received mail from Burpee this morning (never asked for it) but the above tip was included and one which I had forgotten about. I don't know about the last sentence though! Naturally Burpee wants us to buy new!! Good project you are organizing :-)
Most seed will keep 4 years in the refrigerator, in paper envelopes. My experience. Always tell anyone you trade with how old the seed is up front. It is their choice. Too the viability test is a good one. I put my wet paper towel in a ziplock on the fridge. Good tip Loisa. These desert seeds are good for 10 years some of them. I dont let them go that long though. I have the year posted on all envelopes. Most seed is certainly good the second season. Really. 1/2 is not accurate. Sometimes difficulty of germination is more the reason for the seed failing. Some seeds have specific needs. Cooler temps, some like 60's, some 70's , some have to be cold stratisfied, knicking, burning. soaking in hot water, soaking in warm water and so on.
