Vining and Rhizoming 'Weed' control questions

Thousand Oaks, CA

I live in Southern California and, before I knew any better, I planted ivy, asparagus fern and morning glory in the yard. Now that I have gotten more into the tropicals, getting rid of these more nuisance plants has been basically impossible, from what I can tell. I also was stupid enough to set a spider-plant down in the garden (still in its pot)... oh, for a couple years. Now they are an impossible weed, too.. as is Sword Ferns. Figures that all of these forms of life appear to be totally and completely immune to Round Up. There is simply no way to physically weed all this stuff out, especially since the place is now so packed with more delicate and interesting stuff. Any suggestions? In the mean time, I keep digging up rhizomes and 'bulbs' all the time, basically getting no where.

Only woody plants are resistant to Roundup--and that's because most people apply it to the bark. Apply it to the new green growth with a paintbrush taking care not to get any on the desirables. You may have to apply it at the brushkilling strength. If you buy it as a concentrate and mix your own, it's cheaper, and you can tailor the strength to the plant you are targting. If you do this during the active growth season, you will slowly gain control. It's labor intensive, but less labor intensive than digging up the whole thing and attempting to save the plants you want.

Those cheap foam paintbrushes work pretty well for applying Round-Up, and they're disposable. I've gotta do the same thing in our yard...pretty soon, too!! *sigh*
