I would like to donate another tree to the school where I work. The area is in Me zn 4 sandy soil, dry and windy. Last spring I planted an Amelanchierx grandiflora "Autumn Brilliance" and a Syringa reticulata both are doing well.I am at odds what to get. Any suggestions grateful
Thank you, lanie
School Planting
I'm in zone 3/4, sandy soil, dry and windy too. I have very good luck with ponderosa pines. In fact, the schools in this county give each kid a ponderosa pine seedling at their playday they have the last part of the school year.
Other possibilities would be any type of poplar, an edible crab, not an ornamental crab because some are poisonous, (the kids would love this 'cuz the apples would be ripening about the time school starts in the fall), a weeping willow or any willow, an ash, or any other member of the conifer species other than ponderosa pine. Blue Spruce? They are beautiful too.
Just my two cents worth!
