How to make more Hops (Humulus lupulus)?

What's the propagation methods for Hops? A friend sent me a 4" hop root and it's already sent up two good size runners. I'm thinking maybe serpentine layering or standard cuttings, but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks,
dave

Layering will work. Hops also sends out runners that can be dug up and potted. Sometimes they are several feet away from the parent - so watch out!

Dave are you sure you want Hops? They will run yards underground once they get established. This year I found one that has travelled about 15 feet under concrete.

you need a male and female plant to get hops. I could send you cuttings of my male plant.

dave, dave, dave - are you sure you want to do this? I love the aurea so put up with it's wandering ways, the other I'm not sure that I can eradicate if I wanted to. I have hops and hops aurea. There is no need for you to propagate - it will spread like crazy- Just dig down and watch out - it makes more.

Okay, sounds like a good plan to me. Mark - thanks for the offer but I'm not trying to make hops - I just want to enjoy the vine. Maybe I'll want to make hops (and then I'll have to make beer, of course) in another year or so (I hope Trish doesn't see this thread - the last thing she needs is a closet of fermenting beverage - HA!)

Dave you still need a male and female for best results. Hops are grown in the garden for their flowers which are dried in long lengths of stem and then used to decorate the kitchen. if you dont have one of each all you get is an invasive climber. it's like planting a holly tree to expect berries but not having one to cross pollinate.
