King Saga

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Walkway to my home is lined with 6 King Sagas. Sorry I do not know the proper name. Many more on property but one in particular has produced a large pod with over a hundred seeds. As they dropped I placed them in containers and saved them. If anyone could lead me to links or information on planting and caring for these seeds I would be thankful.

Everyone here has been so helpful thought I would try my luck again. Thanks in advance. Bob

Wow another hit! Thanks so much. Answers all my questions. I need to be a mouse in your pocket to find how you gather all this info. I tried search to no avail. Course, probably spelled it wrong.

Your home page is very beautiful as is the music. Ah yes, another question from the one of so little knowledge? Plants by mail? How do you mail plants? Are they talking about self addressed stamped envelopes when they mention SASE? Bet I have a lot more questions!

Thanks MaVie! Bob

Dear Bob,

some plant or seed donor request for sase [i believe is send a stamp envelope, if not mistaken] when income is very limited as in my case. others prefer or ask for stamp/s for seeds, and priority stamp/s for plants.

when i sent out plants, my personal preference is to presoak the plant in B1* and miraclegrow* a day or two to allow the plant retain enough moisture for their journey. wrap the root ball w/presoaked peat moss on the same solution - where u squeeze out most of the liquid. wrap the root ball with plastic wrap along the root ball area & tied to prevent moisture from leaking out. nestle the plant with lots of newspaper, specially in sending those babies in cold areas of the country. the same procedure i do for cuttings request.

i try not to send plants with soil, and use peat moss instead to prevent sending nasty stuffs hiding in the soil. a precautionary step on my part.

recipients of plants i send out are always pleased, as those babies are ever so ready for transplanting. once they receive my trade, all they have to do is unwrap them and plant directly.

i do add a few surprises on my trade, as i find it to be impractical to send just one plant using a priority stamp on each trade... when there is always room for more.

is there anything in my trade list that u would be interested in? i would like to trade with ur sago plant pups. lmk, TIA ... ma vie

*B1 - allow to prevent the plant from shocked of being removed from their medium.

*miraclegrow - gives the plant enough nutrient along it's journey.

I r gettin smarter by the day!! Thanks so much for the info. Not ready to do any trading here yet as I heve only been a gardener for 2 days?? I am learning. One question? What is a priority stamp? Why not just send a money order or check?
I am gathering info on what I have planted here on this property over the years! I have many acres to dedicate to any projects I undertake and while being newly retired (retarded) have been looking for new interests and projects.

I will take the King Sago seeds and work with them first. Will let you know when I have successfully propagated them to an age to ship. Am starting a greenhouse and shaded potting area this date! When ready I will have you ship me something so I can see your method and I will return Sagos in the same manner! I will check your trade list though. I am afraid I do not know the names of many plants but grow smarter by the day!

Thanks for the response and information and in short order bet I will be a trading fool! Hahaha
Take care, Bob

Bob!

Welcome to the coolest pastime on earth - gardening. You have met one of the sweetest ladies ever to assist Mother Nature too. MaVierose is a real gift to us all. The prioity stamp we mention is this: If you request a plant or seeds and the donor says to send a prioirty stamp - they will ususally tell how much postage that it needs to be for. Go to the post office and purchase a priority stamp for that amount and send this to the donor - sometimes they will ask for a padded envelope or extra for packing materials. Then send this to the donor - they will use the priority stamp to send your plants/seeds back to you - and it has priority handling through the post. Kinda like Fed-Ex. This will get the mail to you quicker than regular mail and thus reduce the time the plants spend in the package.

Now - here ya go - monitor the threads like - seed trading, plant trading, annuals, perinnals, general discussion - etc. Drop in on some of the threads so we can get to know you. Make it known that you're a newbie and willing to send postage in exhcnage for seeds or plants when things that interest you are offered. These folks have taken me in like a chick under a wing. The unspoken and implied meaning here is that folks share with you and in turn when you are established and can do the same for others - then you will volunteer to do the same. While you're reading these threads - believe me - you'll learn how to garden. If you have questions - ask - we will answer to the best we can. Mavie has a url for everything under God's sun - she'll be right in there like the rest of us!

Welcome Bob - and don't be shy!

Dear, Dear Suzy :D! thanks for ur kindness. as u have known me for sometime, i do enjoy giving a helping hand. not only sharing info, but if i got something, am also willing to share some of my plants. it is through DG forum member i am able to establish a new garden after losing my previous garden through some unsavory experiences in the past.

i am able to share web site through years of saving these info and bookmarks on my pc. my preference is to share url's cause i think in terms of future reference for the one seeking info. bookmarking also saves the pain of searching in later days. it is also best for me to refer web sites, for fear of leaving some vital info. some details maybe minor to me but it might be of great necessity to others. on occassion senior moments do occur at times, and i would not want to deprive any one of a thorough knowledge they need in the process of learning about a certain plant.

Bob,

next time u visit the US post office, do look around the stamp machines, and u will see some priority stamp. each priority stamp cost $3.50.

when i sent out plants, i prefer the USPS clerk to stamp the package i sent out to prevent insufficient postage. i also sent with delivery confirmation receipt - this allows me and the recepient to track the package for an extra 40 cents added to the package. packaged plant normally takes 2-3 days for delivery.

here's another url for u Bob. u can click on each plant or subject mentioned to learn more ... http://www.krishiworld.com/html/hg_sublinks.html ttyl... ma vie

:). Bob be patient with ur Sago pups... i read a long time ago, they are very stubborn and take their own sweet time coming to life. that's a fair warning i guess ;)!

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Thanks MaVie. I have started several a long time ago with plants at the base of the main one and the lengthy time experience was my experiemce. I think from seed will take even longer! Patience is a virtue Haha Thanks for the warning
