Dave! Kalanchoe

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Just saw your thread on propagating kalanchoe and thought you would enjoy this pic. Kalanchoe, along with jade and aloe, is one of my favorite hobby plants. This big one was in full bloom for many many weeks!

Shoe i love ur plants! lovely combinations. am curious though, the plant behind the aloe is that calamondin? where do u buy them? i've been dying to get one of those plants. Calamondin we use in the Phil., like u would use lemon for lemonade. got tons of Vitamin C on them.... ma vie

MaVieRose...thanks for the compliment, these are some of my favorites! Next to the Kalanchoe is the aloe (as you know); behind the kalanchoe is a jade plant I've trained into a "topiary". The plant you must be referring to behind the aloe is a kumquat! (The calamondin I remember is actually a small very tart orange-type fruit...reminds me of a trifoliate orange.) My DD and I saved some seed from it this yr and we were able to get some more plants started! If they do good I'd be happy to send you some! (Too soon to tell right now tho, they are up to about two inches and some seem to be dying off...perhaps too much moisture. I'm working w/them.).
By the way MaVie...a friend/customer at the market brought me a plant that she just called "lemon leaf". Apparently one just picks the leaves of the plant for cooking and it offers lemon or lime flavor. It is only grown for the leaves (it bears no fruit). Have any ideas on this thing?

u must be referring to kaffir lime, but that one bears fruit though. i will have to research on that one. u got my curiousity!!! watch this thread and i will be back to let u know what it is. curry leaf... http://www.asiafood.org/glossary_2.cfm , very popular in India's cooking. kaffir leaves are used by Thailanese mostly in their cooking. have that nice lemony flavor in it ... http://www.asiafood.org/glossary_1.cfm?alpha=K

MaVie...from reading the info on the Kaffir it sounds like it could be it...I'm going from the description of the leaves being "double". This one is like that, and maybe it just doesn't produce fruit here, or maybe the woman hasn't had one long enuff to see if it does (or maybe it requires a male/female relationship to make fruit).
I'll be back in touch.! Many thanks!

Shoe... are u referring to lemon grass? if not mistaken it is known here in the US also as citronella if not mistaken. otherwise the other lemon flavored leaf that i am familiar with is lemon verbena... http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html , lemon myrtle ... http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html , or lemon balm ... http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html , kaffir lime... http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html , lemon grass... http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/index.html , that is as far as my lemon leaf knowledge goes. is it any of them? lmk.

(Here is is 5:30 a.m. so bear w/my fogginess.)
I only looked at the kaffir lime link earlier...when I saw that it mentioned "double leaves" I knew that was it. Instead of the leaves growing alternate these grow two leaves connected to each other.
I have lemon grass (that tends to grow like pampas grass). Also have lemon balm (melissa).
Thanks for the links!

Shoe,
Whatyou have is Gaulthera, or Lemon leaf, or salal. We use for greenery in the flower shop all the time, customers come in to buy it to use the leaves for cooking and also they buy to paint the leaves with chocolate for fancy desert decorations becauce of the smooth surface of the leaves. I do believe it eventually gets berries on it but I'm not sure if you can eat them.

Shoe,

check this url for kaffir otherwise known as Citrus hystrix DC. ... http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/Rutaceae/Citrus_hystrix.html , http://www.thetropicalspa.com/oldedition/newsletter_b.html , these two url have more specific info on kaffir lime. lmk

Very nice, Shoe! If you wake up to find that plant missing from your greenhouse, it was just the Dave-Burglar paying a visit. ;-)
