Gardeners with Parkinsons

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Sorry I didn't catch you before you left for Georgia, Bobbi - hope you have a great time (and can log onto DG from somewhere down south there!).

Thanks, Marclay. I think the reason I was so achey is the cold I have. I didn't start getting a scratchy throat and cough until last night, but when I awoke in the wee hours to take some NiQuil, all the pieces fell into place. No wonder I was extra achey! The chiro appointment went okay, but I would sure love to get some massages to loosen my muscles up some more!

IMHO, chiropractic and massage should go together! The best results I ever had were when I had an adjustment and then a deep massage by a very large and strong lady named Kim! She gets $90 an hour and I had been treated to half an hour as a gift. I would mortgage my garden for that feeling. Lasted for days.

That sounds lovely, just lovely. I am going to check my insurance company's website to see if, by some miracle, this massage provider might be covered.

Hi everybody...Guess what, I managed to get logged on here at my daughter's home, once I finally remembered my password.
We had a good trip down. We came down Rt. 23 out of eastern Ohio and once you get down into southern Ohio it is beautiful country. We stayed over just below Hendersonville, NC and came the rest of the way on Fri.
Took Rt. 26 on south and it just beautiful country. I love all the moountains. It is pretty flat back in OH where I live.

We came across a produce stand and got the best strawberries I have had in a long while. They weren't so big, like those at the market. And tasted like strawberrie are supposed to taste,

My hubby's 60th was Thurs so when we arrived or daughter (Kelli) had lined their driveway with black balloons and all kinds of signs. My husband was really surprised. Later we went over to our Kellis in-laws and there were more balloons and signs. We had a cookout. All in all, it was a good time.

Kelli has worked on her yard and garden for the past 5 years and has made a lot of progress. Sometimes I go down for a visit and help her. That I love. She has acquired my love for gardening. She has a fairly steep sloping hill upward from just beyond their deck and about 12 inches down it is solid rock in most places. So it has been a challenge to plant. Do you know what will grow in such shallow soil in Georgia. It gets the hot afternoon sun.
Plus they are on a water alert. Only allowed to water on certain days between assigned hours.

Did you know that butterfly bushed will mltiply. Kelli started with two and now has about 12 and they get really big. I have two and I am lucky they survive the cold winters.

We DH and I are going to take our little granddaughter to feed the ducks today. We try to "make memories" with her whenever we get a chance. There will be a birthday party for her Sunday. She will be 4 and is quite a character.

Well must go, hope my flowers are all doing well back home.
You all have a really good day.

Hi, Bobbi! I could just picture RT 23 as I read your description of it. We used to go to a B&B in Logan, and we often took Rt23 to get there. It's so pretty down in the hills! Were the dogwoods still blooming, or were they done for the spring?

I didn't know butterfly bushes multiplied! The joys of more temperates climes, eh? I'm like you - glad they make it through the winters here. This year I only pruned out the dead in the spring and left them pretty big (big is relative, I know, LOL), hoping maybe they'll get some substance to them this year.

Has Kelli thought about making an alpine garden on that slope of hers? She could mulch it with stone/gravel and plant stuff like soapwort and sandwort - trailing alpines which would cover it in no time. They don't require much water once established, and they'd really fill in and be gorgeous when they bloomed. I have soapwort she'd be welcome to - I need to think some of the lush stuff in our bed out front.

Hi Gardenwife.....Will pass that info on to my daughter.
We head for home tomorrow morning. Up old I75, hate that interstate. So much truck traffic. Wish aus a safe trip.
Be talking to you when I get home.

Gardewife, thanks for the suggestions. I passed them on to my daughter.
We arrived home safe and sound. It took us 10 1/12 hrs. but traffic was not too bad.
Oh, the dogwoods had ALready bloomed. I forgot to answer that question.
My flowers all have seemed to survived my absence, as well as our 2 cats. We have been having thunderstorms beginning around 5am this morning. They just keep passing over. One after another. WIth some heavy rain. At least it is warmer now, 63 this am.
I still have some planting to do. It is supposed to rain off and on for the next 3 days.
Well, gotta get....Have a massage this morning and then ride in equestrian therapy this afternoon. The ET is really fun and helps with my balance and exercises all my muscles. We are only 3, what they call independent, riders
and our drill sargent (instructor) and volunteers are a good group and just about as funny as the people in DG. We have a really good time.

We had some really loud thunder, and lots of lightning, for several hours straight this early morning (1-6am). Poor Sarah kept trying to crawl under the bed, but we had boxes there to block her (she got stuck last time, and peed as we got her untangled and out, sigh). Not a good night's sleep for either Howie or me.

I used to be so horse-crazy; I had that adolescent girl horse-love thing going on through junior high and high school. When we moved to Ohio just in time for high school, I was able to get a horse for the first time. When boys and hanging out with friends became a bigger part of my life, Buddy became less a part of it and I sold him my senior year. I have many fond memories of quiet trailrides on him, though. Even delivered newspapers on horseback with my boyfriend for a while, riding double!

HiBobbi How are you doing I havent been here lately o this forum Hope your arden is growing well in this heat. I dont do heat well. Shirley

Wapakoneta, OH(Zone 5b)

Hi back to you Shirley, I have been up and down. Some difficulty with my meds not doing their thing properly. It seems like every so often I go through a bad spell and then I will get really lucky and have a few good weeks or sometimes months.

My garden is looking pretty good. Just keeping up with my vines keeps me hopping. Then when your legs won't cooperate it takes longer yet. But I keep plugging away. I am not one to give up easily. Heat bothers me also.

But...how are you doing? Didn't you fall recently?
Hope you are dong better!
