avacado

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I have had an avacado seed soaking in water for while, and it's starting to split on the wider end. Should I be doing something different with it now? I'm thinking it might be ready to plant, but how deep? I've never tried to grow one before.

I have a two year old avacado tree growing now. I never soaked the seed when I started it. I tried that several times and they only rotted or I suspended them with toothpicks and the water evaporated from beneath them. I started mine by planting it directly in soil. The trick is to plant it half way (The real trick being to put the right side up). I would guess yours should be planted since it has split. Don't expect fruit ever, though it makes a nice housplant tree.

Thanks Studley, so I should plant it with half sticking out, and right side up. I'm assuming the wider end is up right?

Joan... the wider part is the bottom - where the roots will emerge. the pointed part is the top of the seed. for the avocado to bear fruit, u will need a male and a female plant, but that will take years to produce. here's a url to learn more... http://crfg.org/pubs/ff/avocado.html
