Official 'mater planting time now!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

You guessed it! From the 'visit from swoznick' thread I warned ya! People around here won't plant maters and warm weather crops 'til "that weirdo guy" trims his winter beard. I best get going, I have several hundred plants to get in the ground! Ya'll behave now! Happy Gardening!

{Wow...well, I tried to trim off as much gray as I could! And the camera flash nearly blinded me! Now it looks like I better go get some springtime sun on my white wintertime face. See ya!)

Now Shoe, why would you want to cut away all of that beautiful grey hair. It gives us all some character and maturity. When people look at us and ask questions, they think we should know, cause we've been there/done that. lol
Your just as cute with a short beard as with the long one...now go out and get them thar taters planted!!!

Donna

Hey are you in your shoffice there? Looks like a nice setup. My monitor is the same brand (Viewsonic), but my speakers are to the side. :)

Nice trim job, 'Shoe! Kenny does the same thing ~ trying to cut off all the gray in his moustache! I won't let him because it reminds me that he survived 19 car wrecks, umpteen barroom brawls, getting stabbed once and shot twice all so he could be mine someday! *VERY BIG GRIN!* Seriously, the character that shows on his face runs deep and it wasn't there years ago. Same with you ~ you wouldn't have as many stories if you didn't have some of that gray. I think both of you are beautiful.

Yep, Kenny was not a good boy in his younger years, but he's calmed down considerably now, stays home, plants tomatoes (I'll tell him it's time *grin*) and tells stories of his exploits to all who'll listen. The funniest one is about getting shot stealing watermelons when he was fourteen. The old man who owned the melons had filled his shotgun with rock salt. Kenny heard the *ka-chunk* of the gun cocking in the dark, so ran for the fence. He almost but not quite made it, so now his butt is peppered with little round scars! *GIGGLE-SNORT-GUFFAW!* Oh, to hear him tell it! He ends it by pulling down the waistband of his britches a couple inches to show a few of his "watermelon dimples", saying, "The moral of this story is watermelons are best without salt." Brings tears to everyone's eyes from laughing so hard!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

ROTF Wingnut!! Priceless! I can imagine the conversations you guys must have! :D Are you guys going to make it to the Round-Up?

Shoe, ya look downright dignified there. You must have long arms, eh? :)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Gosh Shoe, you look so, so *normal*. LOL I liked you wearing the winter burly too. :) And you have beautiful blue eyes. Hmmm, are you trying to suck up with that computer screen?? ha ha ha
Hubby shaved his beard off a few weeks ago. He thinks he looks old. I think he looks like a kid! LOL With all the health problems and weight loss, he sure has gotten thin! Wish I could get HIM to plant something. Guess I'll just be thankful he takes care of the kids so I can work outside.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah, Kimberly, it takes a bit to get him going, but once you do he's a riot! I wish we could come to the Roundup, but I don't think we'll make it this year. There'll be another next year, right? Maybe we can then! I'd sure love to!

Crossville, TN

Dear 'Shoe....one could loose ones self in those beautiful blue eyes....and I love the gray in the beard...as So-cal says...it gives you the "been there, done that" look...and I'll BET you HAVE!!! I like your Shoffice too! *SWOON* Jo

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Well I declare there's ole blue eyes! I like the trim shoe but heck your shoe no matter what. I guess I better be getting my garden tilled up and ready to go it's official now...... its the time to plant maters. lol Wingnut that's so funny. Maybe Kenny and Shoe need to meet up can you imagine the stories they could tell. lol

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Oh my...now I feel like I shouldn't have cut any of it off!!
Gray must be "the color" this yr! (I'm hip!)
Yes Dave, that is my shoffice. So homey and comfortable in here! (And I even have a stove...I can cook while I visit DG!) (Oh, my speakers were also on the side. I just set them up there to get them out of the way!)
(Lisa...glad you shaved, now it really IS official!)
Wingy..I think I remember your hubby!...Fortunately I was on his side that time! It all comes back to me now...we were in the Skinny Gizzard Bar and Grill that nite. They didn't serve beer in bottles (they thought it was a safer environment that way). Next thing I knew I was doing my best to stuff a Bud can in someone's ear (in the hopes he could hear better..twas a positive thing ya know)...well, never mind, long story, but perhaps Kenny remembers me!
GW..yo're absolutely right! I have long skinny arms! I took that pic!
Badseed...you're on to me~! YOu knew my background screen would draw some attention!!! I love seeing that screen say "Welcome Home Horseshoe"! (I need to make that my screen saver!)
RR...you behave! Quit swooning, you're making me dizzy!! Oh well, now that the beard is trimmed I am looking innocent again, eh? Ain't been there. ain't done that! Just looking that way tho!!
By the way, Mystic has a good point...me and Kenny and whoever is willing oughta get together and tell tall tales, or even tell the truth (heck, I ain't proud!)
Thanks for ya'lls posts...I preshate that! Now behave, and have fun! Buh-bye!!!

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Hi Shoe, Good to see ya again, You did mean a trim didn't you!! I really thought you might go "all the way" with this. My hubby had a full beard for about a year, I think it was to celebrate the Bicentennial in '76, Honestly, when he took it all off he looked ten years younger! But I guess you would not be "Shoe" without it.

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH...yep Azalea, just a trim. DD and DW won't let me cut it all off. And I don't blame them! I reckon if your hubby looked ten yrs younger w/a full shave then I'll be happy looking only 5 yrs younger with a trim. (Cours now, I need to save some of that "been there done that" look ya know!)

Knoxville, TN

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

For a minute I thought you were saying you had to save some of that hair...Then I saw where you were going with it. I had a fleeting image of a hat made of crocheted Horseshoe beard hair. Thank God it was fleeting! ;D

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOOKIN GOOOD!!!! Good Lookin!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

GW, don't give him any ideas!! He will be going out and gathering all that hair he put out to scare off the deer. Wonder if he knows how to crochet?
You do look more "dignified" now Shoe, and don't look as skinny as you did in the other photo. I'm glad it's time to plant the maters now, cause I've been waiting on you to give the word. Going to plant my tropical beds too, hope it don't frost.
Wingnut, I'll have to get DH to tell his watermelon story.

Humansville, MO(Zone 6a)

been there done that with the rock salt then seen the farmer a coulple of days later at the station I was still a little sore and he relized i was one of the boys and his comment was why didn't you come an asked you know you could have gotten two or three to eat told him they tasted better
sliping into the patch then his dad let it out that he came home one night with rock salt too it seems my greatgrand father had got him in his patch at about the same age

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

'Shoe, Kenny says, "I THOUGHT that was you! Yeah, we were on the same side! I 'preshate you buying me that beer. I spent an hour getting that can outta' my ear! But I sure did hear better ~ after it was out." LOL!

One of these days, we've GOT to make it to a Roundup. We'll sit him and 'Shoe next to each other, put a beer in each of their hands and let 'em rip (the beer helps lube the vocal chords, ya' know). Speaking of beer, here's the perfect crochet project for 'Shoe's excess hair (pic) http://libweb.hawaii.edu/ttp/ttp_jpg/338437.jpg (pattern) http://members.tripod.com/CarolynMurphy/canhat1.html

Oh, Dave719! It must have been an epidemic! LOL!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH!...Wingnut! Kenny remembers me!! Cool! Old friends are hard to come by! (Sorry to have put that beer in his ear!) Tell him I'll buy him another one, only this time it'll go in his hand...(I hear tell Mystic is bringing cases and cases and cases and cases of home-brew.)
By the way dave719 and Kenny...I was either much faster than ya'll or more fortunate (sort of anyway.) When me and two friends raided a melon patch we had our "loot" in hand (I had two of em!) when all of a sudden KA-BOOM! and buckshot was raining down on us! Not a one of us had to say "RUN!"...we were already in motion! Cuz of the ruts and potholes in the cow pasture my friends ended up dropping their heist (there was an awful lot of zig-zagging, you know, to fool the bullets). All we could hear was KABOOM! Over and over!! This was at dark time and all we could see was outlines and shadows. I dropped one of my melons and tucked the other one in the crook of my elbow and ran like a football player with the goal posts in site, ziggin' and zaggin', hopping up high then going into a running squat. At one point in time one of my feet (bare, of course) planted itself in a "meadow muffin" and caused me to slide to the left about the same time another KABOOM rang out! (I think that cow patty saved my life, and my melon!)
We all made it back to our bicycles and headed for the tree house! Man! So close~!
Problem was, what w/all that excitement when we cut into the "watermelon" we discovered it was a daggone Citron!!
Oh well...such is life!

Blum, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh shoe! how many little critters lost thier home? not to worry,it will soon grow back. My Dh has a face cover also. I think he is trying to hide his hanging jowl,Or he just don't want to do the daily shave routine anymore..nor do I he,he, I have blue eyes too, but yours are unusually light.very captivating. Now do't get the big head,go plant them maters!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

tink, my head is the perfect size to keep my hat on on most windy days! And no critters were doomed. I screamed and hollered b4 shaving to give them fair warning. I'm like your DH...I have a beard cuz I'm too lazy to shave everyday.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Shoe...took your advice: http://davesgarden.com/showthread/228756.html

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH! Just saw it! Really cool!!! Ya'll gotta go see that! (Loved seeing it in the newsletter dave! It should go on the DG Calendar if we ever decide to do one!)

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

^ Bump

It's not quite April, but hey.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Thanks, Gardenwife. Dave ought to have a DG almanac with these timely tips and dates for planting!

My tomatoes sprouted yesterday! Ta Da!!!!!!! How cool is that? Shoe....DH wants that hat! HAH!!!!!

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

HAH...I can't believe this got resurrected also! (I'm kinda scary lookin', ain't I?)
These are the fun threads we need to read in the winter time to get us all thru the cold season. Pretty fun, eh? (Especially when it brings about people planting in snow!)

I like the Almanac idea, Weezin!
And vic, I guess me and your hubby are goin' steady now, eh? I'm wearing his hat!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

These were surely good days on DG, and both Dennis and myself had a great time visiting.

Northeast, WA(Zone 5a)

SHOE!! I'm back.

Yep, that time of year again and, you guessed it, no ripe tomatoes. Here it is the end of August. Beautiful big green ones. Love the color, but not on tomatoes this time of year. Even Celebrity and Early Girl, 50+ dayers and nothing.

This year I planted them in Earthbuckets on my kitchen deck because I had ankle surgery in May and knew I wouldn't be able to do much way down in the hoophouse. Along about, close to the end of July, maybe a little earlier, I cut them back, anything that wasn't producing, and gave them a shot of Bloom fertilizer 'cause at that time they didn't even have tomatoes on them!! Well, we normally get a fairly hard frost any time after Labor Day, (next weekend?) and then we have pretty good weather thru mid October anyway.

I am thinking one of the problems might be the nights, all summer, even tho some days were in the 90s, were down in the 50s and very low 60s. The plants look really good, overgrew the stakes in fact.

Had to come to the expert.

What do I do now???? Jeanette
