I'm new to this formum but love shrubs.

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

We have several Lilacs, 2 Flowering Almonds, some old fashion Spirea, one of those dwarf pink and white bloom Spirea, some Beauty Berry bushes, Forsthia(I know I misspelled that one) and a spreading clump of Clove Shrub. The Clove Bush is in bloom and the yard smells fabulous. I've been trying for years to get a Carolina Sweet Shrub and a Philadelpia Mockorange but have managed them yet. A friend keeps giving me starts of the Mockorange but they just don't seem to like our soil. Her's is very rocky and ours is black clay. I've tried replacing all the soil in the hole with some of her soil but it only helped for that season. The C. Sweet Shrub I just haven't found around here. It may not really be hardy in central MO.

leaflady I too love trees and shrubs. I'm surprised you can't grow the Philadelphus (Mock Orange). Mine is doing very well in clay soil, with amendments of course. Perhaps the drainage is not too good for you. Try digging the hole and then putting in about 3 inches of river rock or stones, then more soil and then plant the shrub. Is your soil very acid? This could be a problem too!! Is your Beauty Berry called Kolkwitzia?? If it is, I would love some cuttings later on in the year if you can spare them. I will try and find Calycanthus floridus for you if you like (Carolina sweet shrub). Is this what you are after:-
