HG cuttings

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

On April 1st I took 20 cuttings of HG. The cuttings were small, as is my style, lol. I dipped them in rooting hormone and stuck them in a vermiculite/sand mix and put them in a mini green house. Today, 9 are rooted well enough to plant in pots and the other 11 are callused!! I call that success!! I also took some EP cuttings, but they aren't rooted yet. BTW, these were on a 72*F heat mat.
Edited to fix the date of the cuttings, lol.(If my brain worked all the time, I'd be dangerous)

Congrats! Keep me in mind if you ever want to part with one :o)

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

You are awash in HG - not one failure - I'm impressed. Only you could have a 100% success rate.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

That's why I wanted to start so many. Most of my customers don't know a datura from a brug, let alone the different varieties. I start the good ones for you guys. I also have some Jean Pasco rooted.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Great job Calalily.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Cala. . . you are amazing. I think we all ought come to your greenhouse and take lessons from you.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Cala, we should all send you a branch of one of our dear ones for you to multiple for us.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

BrugNanny - Cala'd be smart if she never let any of us near her GH. She might set the dogs on us - the brug sniffing dogs!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Cala, will you give lessons at the roundup and show us how to do this? I've already asked if you'd do something, and since you're so good at this!!!!

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

That's great Cala. Now if any of us get that double pink we'll have to send it to you so you can multiply it.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I've decided that I'm much better at multiplying than genetics!! You guys develope them and I'll make more.
TiG, I will bring some examples and give lessons if anyone is interested at the Round-Up.
If anyone sees something that they want a start of, just email me(Nana, I know, you want one of EVERYTHING, lol). It's easier for me to keep up if it's an email(memory is going, going....)plus I sometimes can't remember where I posted something. Hey, I'm not that old!! just have too much to remember. DH says it's "selective" memory loss, since I can remember the names of hundreds of plants but can't remember to wash his jeans!!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Cala, I'm going to put you down for 15 or 20 minutes, hope that's okay!!! This could apply to a lot of plants I'm thinking and just watching and listening to you will be a treat!!! thank you

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

TiG, you know I love the teeny tiny cuttings and use this method with lots of plants. I've rooted phlox, veronica, cuphea and all kinds of things. With the passifloras, the cuttings need to be bigger, but with Tim's help, I'm getting about 90% rooting. I love to take cuttings, it's been an obsession for a long time.
I've found that the best rooting medium is a mix of sand and vermiculite, and the best rooting solution is a mix of IBA and NAA with vitamin B1. I think controlling the humidity helps too and the heat mats are set at 72*. Cleanliness and not damaging the cuttings too much is important and since I've switched to a razor, the cuttings take better without rotting. I use alcohol for disinfecting, since I can't stand the smell of bleach(not to mention what it does to my clothes if I spill it) and keep a container with alcohol handy and just toss the cutters in it when I finish with a plant. The gel hand sanitizer(made of alcohol) is good for the hands and doesn't dry them out too bad.

Cala,

YOU ARE AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG, YOU GO GIRL!! Cuttings are obviously your forte. DH is lucky to have you. With the success you have, you are most certainly an asset to the greenhouse business you both operate.

Keep up the good work and pretty soon you entire state will have brugs for days and days and days...oh not to mention the brug forum here...

oh by the way did you read my bribe for the morning glory war...lol.

Joydie

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Joydie, I did see that!! It's really the 30 X 96 one that I'm after now, lol. I figured I could install a water garden, plant my brugs in the ground and have the passifloras growing up the sides and have my own personal jungle, but DH wouldn't go for it. Said something about having to make a living so he could afford my plants.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Nice going Cala,

You do amaze me. When are you going to buy the 40 acres next to your place so you will have room for all this stuff? :-)

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Brugie, can't afford it, lol. I wouldn't have any money left to buy brugs with.

Great work Cala, you've obviously got the knack. Keep up the good work and let's see some pictures of these tiny guys.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Cala, that is awesome.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Calla,it took almost a year to root them?

New Iberia, LA(Zone 9a)

CONGRAT!!!!! I wish I could do but no GREENHOUSE!!! sobbing... I like to do cutting and rooting them but no GREENHOUSE..... One day!!!!

Hamilton, Canada

Cala,

Come on now...lol...its a bribe. I had to laugh when I saw the size of the greenhouse you are after...geesh...pond, brugs, vines, bananas, ferns...sounds like paradise to me. When you find someone who can come up with a good bribe like that let me know so I can move in with you...I see you are a good cook too! LOL. Can I order mint juleps by the pond?

Joydie

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Cala, did you really mean May 1st?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

bet she meant March 1st

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If I had taken cuttings last May 1, and they didn't root for me in a couple of months at most, they would have been history. Bet you are right tiG.

FSH, TX

I must confess I am quite envious of Cala's knowledge and expertise.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I think that makes ALL of us, Eric.

lagrange, GA(Zone 7a)

The cuttings you sent me are all robust looking plants now. You must have worked magic on them before sending them because I have only sprayed them twice with tea tree oil and soap and fed them fish and miracle grow every three days. Rotating the feedings. They look great.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Geez-O-Pete, where is my brain!! I meant April 1st, they rooted in less than 2 weeks!! I can't believe I made that boo boo. I need a vacation, lol.

Hamilton, Canada

My gosh Cala,

At that rate of rooting I think you need to get busy and make me a couple...just add them to my shopping cart. (smile) Do you have Star Jasmine Vines? Let me know and I will put aside for you...have several of them now.

Joydie

Temuco, Chile(Zone 9b)

Calalily, I'm very new to brugs, but I do an awful lots of cuttings, love it !
I do read every post with the idea of learning.
Can you answer me this question? May be everybody knows it , not me : What does it mean " IBA and NAA" ?

cristina

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Cristina, IBA is indole-3-butric acid.
NAA is napthaleneacetic acid
I asked this same question a couple of months ago. LOL

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

NAA-Naphthaleneacetamide(acid) IBA-Indolebutyric acid. They are synthetic auxins that cause the plant to produce undifferentiated cells that will in turn grow roots(instead of leaves) the synthetic ones are more stable than the naturally occuring ones, like willow water.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

LOL. I almost had it right Cala. I had asked the same question and had written down your answer a while back. Must have wrote it down wrong.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i am pretty sure these are the 2 ingredients in Schultz transplant plus, also B1, that i like to use, in laymen's terms.

I don't use it on everything, special stuff, don' know if i am right but i usally use a little on hard to root stuff when i see a little growth, use it when transplanting or if a plant is just sitting not growing. also used it on my brugs that weren't coming back from winter yet with good results so far. and for transplanting certain things.
