Does anyone here do square foot gardening?

Tilton, NH(Zone 4a)

Is there any advice you can give me that the book doesn't cover? I am doing my first raised bed square foot style garden this year, and I'm really looking forward to it. I still have four feet of snow on the ground, but I have started my tomatoes and peppers already.

I live in a little house surrounded by forest - lots of shade, especially to the south side - and sandy soil. The other impediments to gardening are two year old and eight-month old daughters.

Thanks!

All I can say is good luck on tomatoes and peppers, I have tried for 3 years to get them to grow here. I too have lots of shade. I planted them in my sunniest spot and it was not enough. This past year our neighbor cut down trees to the west of me and south of me, however I still was not getting enough light for a decent crop. I would say if you are not getting 8 hours of direct sun you might as well skip those veggies.

Square foot gardening is great. I did it intensely at my other place. What caught my interest was plentiful crop in small area. You can do so well with the cool season crops. I certainly would strongly suggest your ammending the soil. I used the mix suggestion that is in the book. You may be able to do tomatoes and peppers in containers.I especially like the vertical concept. Just great for tomatoes, kukes and any of the viners. If you have 8 or more hrs of sunshine outside of your garden proper, try trellised containers for your tomatoes! Let me know what you decide and good luck!
