I'm sure that many of you bird lovers already know this, but for those who don't. I grow a variety of sunflowers because I find them very beautiful and useful. Many, I use for their edible seeds as my son can't get enough of them.Others I use as natural bird feeders in the winter. I simply cut the whole flower head off in the summer before the little guys devour them(they have so much to choose from in the summer). Then I dry the whole head and in the winter, I wire them to a couple of my trees and fence posts as I know that winter is a hard time for the birds. Squirels appreciate them too, and while not everyone likes squirrels, everything has to eat.I find this to be alot easier than continually taking down bird feeders and refilling them. Bent coat hangers work well for hanging the heads...When I'm feeling real lazy or the snow is real deep, I've just gone far enough outside to put a couple on the roof of my garage or shed.
Sunflower heads/nature's bird feeders
Someone after my own heart. It's been a long and hard winter for wildlife. Or so my receipts for seed etc indicate! :-)
I will try that this year, thanks for sharing that tip.
Sure is a good idea, i grow sunflowers every year, but usually leave them to pick on them, so will dry them and do as you have said. Sheila England
