I planned it already a long time ago to post this picture. It shows the the winding path of breeding. Goldrausch is a cross of Sommertraum (Summerdream) a white suaveolens look alike Multi x C. Grimaldi. Sommertraum itself is a cross of C. Grimaldi x suaveol. Rosa Traum (Pink Dream). Therefore Goldrausch is the result of a backcross from daughter (Sommertraum) to mother (C. Grimaldi). Out of 59 white suaveolens type seedling was Goldrausch the only colored hybrid with much versicolor influence. Goldrausch has only one fault; in halfshade, the flowers last almost a week. In bright sunlight maybe just two days. The size of the flowers range between 30 -38cm.
Goldrausch (Goldrush) or how genes can be mixed
I have a lot of shade here, so that would be wonderful for me. Very pretty flower Monika. Wouldn't it be great if they could all hold their blooms for a week?
Thats nice to know that even though there were so many whites ,you can still luck out with some color!
Thats simply incredible for a flower so large. Monika, you are killing us over here in the states. I want you to know that we can't bear too much more of this.
Brugman - I can take whatever she throws us! (and love it)
I'm getting the distinct feeling that whatever we try to do has been done before. Probably by Monika and her friends.
Liz, I was thinking that too, we are just playing "catch up". I didn't know that Pink Dream was Rosa Traum.
Liz and Calalily..there are still an endless number of combinations we can do as far as crosses. The Chromosome count on brugs is double the standard number...like plumerias..they have double to..thats why a white plumeria selfed or crossed with another white can give, Orange,red,pink,yellow,white,rainbow...see what I'm getting at?? LOL So we can still come up with some awesome new brugs that haven't happened yet...don't give up.. :-)
I see, like African violets? They have lots of chromosomes too. Each seedling could be totally different from any you've seen before. I know I will be planting a bunch out to see what I get.
I translated the german Name for you into english for better understanding. Rosa Traum has a great gene potential as it is not a true B. suaveolens. With the right partner, you also can expect orange. Its the same with Flamenco.
The rest of Goldrauschs sisterplants did not have the quality the mother Sommertraum. Sommertraum is still considered to be the best white B. suaveolens (its a Multihybrid) as it has dark green foilage, that makes a big contrast to the white flowers. The corolla edges do not get brown so fast as often seen in other B. suaveolens.
[(Grimaldi x Rosatraum=Summertraum) x Charles Grimaldi ]=Goldraush....Is that correct? so this would be Charles [Grimaldi x Rosatraum x (Charles Grimaldi)] =GoldRaush
Grimaldi is [(aurea x suaveolens) x (verisocolor)] if I'm not mistaken so what we end up with is an incredible mix of hybrids. Can't wait to recieve your book in English personally as I am hoping it will shed some more light on the subject of Brugmansia for me. I of course will sit in awe of the pictures for hours upon end as well...especially if I can't read it. Thinking of asking for a German dictionary for my birthday. Then I can sit for hours with both books.
Thats correct Eric. Its surprising, that the versicolor part of C. Grimaldi is so very hard to get. C.Grimaldi is still the best Brugmansia in orange and a good breeding partner when B. suaveolens is avoided. I received beautiful hybrids with dream colors (carrot red) when pollinated with B. aurea golden or even better, B. x candida Ocre. I will look for some color slides to show you, that there were tremendous hybrids in this cross. I will repeat it, as I killed the best of them by mistake.
My Dr.Sues X Solid Gold hybrids were noticeably more versicolor as far as the seedpods were concerned on the three I kept, but one could still tell they were not true versicolor seedpods. However, the resulting flowers however did not look versicolor. I only kept the first 3 to bloom in the first year in color though so chances are I missed some incredible color combinations when I culled them. I'm learning a lot from you Monika and I thank you for that. For those of you that don't know, Dr.Sues, Solid Gold, and Charles Grimaldi are all multihybrids from [(aurea x suaveolens) x versicolor] crosses. I may just have to make some Dr.Sues x Charles Grimaldi crosses though from the looks of things though. Still, I do love the shape of Ocre...if only it was pink or peach....
Thanks again for the valuable info Monika.
