Mold- Why Did They Do That

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Looked at my tray of seeds and every cell is molded. Know I have to start over. They only thing I tried to save is 4 little edgecomb tomato plants and I shall see if they make it.

I hear a sprinkle of sand is good on the surface of the soil when sowing seeds... Hope someone can help, or did you already toss them? John

Earlier someone mentioned sprinkling cinnamon on the surface and the mold goes away. I tried it and it works. Took a few days, but then they were mold free. Didn't hurt the plants either.

Not enough warmth maybe?

I always have problems getting the moisture just right too. It's always too wet or too dry...lol I guess that's why I try not to fool with seeds too much. It aggrevates me to death, trying to get the conditions just right.

Too damp? No air circulation? Didn't use sterile soil? All these things can cause mold and "dampening off". Try planting in the potting soil marked "starter mix". It usually is composed of peat, perlite, & vermiculite. Also, if you are using containers that have been used before, wash them in soapy bleach water and rinse before planting new seeds.

I don't water from the bottom until the plants have developed true leaves. If the soil is waterlogged, it can mold, and the seedlings are much harder to transplant, since the soil clings to the root systems.

I'm a real believer in those domed trays for propagating in the house. You can mist the tops of the seed trays, then the inside of the dome lids, and keep the little seeds and seedlings moist without soaking them. The lids keep the moisture in.

This is the way I do it, and I have great success, but there are other methods that work equally well, I'm sure.

Here is what I did. I had a seed starter kit with dome lid and the little disk you soak in water and they swell up. I did that and let them drain. Put in the seeds placed the lid on and waited and one day they were covered in mold.
