Datura Inoxia variegata...

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I'm doin the HAPPY DANCE this morning....I looked at my seed flats at work and found 3 or 4 variegated datura inoxias..nice swirls or white and cream on dark green leaves!!!Yippee! I had these a long time ago..but the leaves were cream with green splotches. The seeds from that plant come up all white and always die shortly after the fist leaves appear. These new ones I will propagate from cuttings and try to keep them going. It has medium sized white flowers..at least thats what they used to have...with these new seedlings..who knows!! :-)

FSH, TX

Congrats to you. How many seeds did you start to get those very few? Those sound very beautiful with the darker green leaves and the white to cream markings. I used to have a cacti I grafted with similar markings only it was cream to canary yellow on dark green. Its so hard to get good variegation sometimes. Can't wait to see your pictures Kyle.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wow! Congratulations. I've never seen a variegated one. I grew several different kinds last year but this one sounds unique.I wish you a lot of luck with your seedlings. A variegated Datura sounds very cool.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Brugmansia..I planted about 10 - 12 seeds only of this one..so guess I may plants some more..thats pretty high percentage for only about 12 seeds! I'll try to get some digiatl pics in a few days..need to let the seedlings gain a little more size.. :-)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Snowhermit...a nursery called Terra-Nova in Oregon has a cream edged datura metel with large white flowers.I had that cultivar at one time..but it died during winter storage. The person it came from does a lot with variegates. He sent it to Terra Nova and they tissue cultured it...so you may see them at some nurseries this spring that carry unusual plants. :-)

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Kyle, the Datura inoxia quiquecuspida ‘Missouri Marble’ that is available at Terra-Nova is stunning. It's a shame that they only sell wholesale. I was just in Tigard last night, would have loved to have popped in...
I do have a friend who has her license, and if we can buy in small quantities, I think we just might. but if we have to buy 100 or more...welll then that might just be outta the question.

Pebble..they are $2.50 each and you have to buy a flat of 72..........

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

Maybe there would be enough of us who would want some to help with the cost. Sounds really pretty.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Wareloolily....later this summer if all of mine live I'll start some cuttings and we can spread them around.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

That would be great. Thanks.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

what about calla? She can buy wholesale I think!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Wow Kyle, 72 plants - egads......that's 180 bucks, but no shipping, cause they are just down the road....still a bit steep for me though. Or, I could find out if they have sold some to local nurseries and I could go there.......or
I can wait and see if you get cuttings......(thanks)

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

The Glasshouse Works seels these same plants---for $25.00 each! Maybe you SHOULD buy a flat and sell the extras on e-Bay! I would certainly be glad to buy a few at the $2.50 price, plus shipping, if anyone does want to work up a group deal.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

If there is enough interest, I would consider doing it.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Yeah, a co-op!heck,I'd buy 10 of them!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Pebble, I'd take 5 of them. More if you need me to. Don't want to look greedy, but I do have some friends who would be happy to get a little gift from me.

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I will too.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

You can count me in also if something is worked out. I would gladly buy 5 or 6 and even a few more if you don't have enough buyers. I will be out of town this week-end so I will check back Sunday night and see what is going on.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Put me down for 5!

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Count me in, too, please?? A friend of mine introduced this.
He told me where to get, but far away from me!
I will buy 7. More if you need
Let me know if I can be included?
Thank you,
Alice

Tyler, TX(Zone 8a)

Pebbles I will take 5 or more if necessary Thanks a lot Just let me know

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Looks like we're up to 42, I would take 5, that would bring us up to 47.

Hamilton, Canada

If someone would ship them to Canada, I would pay expresspost shipping and buy 10 of them. Count me in for sure!!
Joydie

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If they come in cell pack, it would be easier to buy them as probably, 3's or 6's. I'll just take them however they come. Would take six if that is how they are packed.

Wonder if it would help to start a new thread just about the daturas? Some people might not read this thread after the initial few posts.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Brugie...they are 72 plants to a flat........small plugs actually..then get replanted as soon as they are purchased.....

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Kyle, if those are the kind of plug flats that I have, with plugs about as big around as the end of ones index finger, someone will have quite a job separating them and shipping. Generally when the nurseries get a flat of plugs, they are very small, probably less than an inch in height. Suppose that is how these will be?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

If that is the case.....might not be a very good idea after all. Kyle, what do you think?

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Just a question---the nursery that's selling these in flats of 72---they're porpagating them by cuttings, right? Since apparently one cannot count of getting the variegated foliage when growing from seed? I would like to know the approximate size of the plants, how the person would be reshipping them, etc., before I commit myself---although I really WOULD like to have some!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I just posted the picture from Terra Nova on a separate thread. It is a pretty one!

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

These plants are TISSUE cultured..so all will be a like.. see the pic Pebble posted for a better look. the plants will be small but will grow..
:-)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Pebble you could count me in for 3 or 4.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

can the plastic be cut so the plants can be kept in the plug but detached in groups, like the 6 packs?

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I Have no idea....
Seems to me, several yrs ago, a friend of mine at the office and I ordered a flat of 72 plants, an assortment of plants from a greenhouse and they gave us a map of what was in each cup (or plug), and we spend a good portion of an afternoon cutting and snipping at the plastic cups. I would think that this one would be that way too.
Unless it is just in a tray with 72 plants in it, in which case it would be a nightmare.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Pebble they should be in individual plug holes...

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

Yeah, cutting the tray apart should work---and should make them easy to ship, too.
I checked out the Terra Nova website and e-mailed them asking if they could put me in touch with a retailer anywhere in the US that offered these thru mail-order, but so far I've heard nothing. I also looked over their list of folks who retail their plants, and none of the ones whose websites I checked out offered this particular plant. They've probably just now started offering it.
Eclipse, where did you get the seeds you grew your seedlings from? Was it just a random mutation from one of your own plants, or did you get them in the expectation of variegated offspring? And how do you do cuttings from datura? I've never been able to root any cuttings from mine.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

MsBatt, the seeds were some I collected from plain green plants in 98'.Labeled as fragrant white toloache.Cuttings can be done on daturas..a little harder to root than brugs..but definately possible..Logees use to root cuttings of double whites at one tme.Cuttings need to be done in a greenhouse and possibly under a timed mist system.

Thought I posted this last night, but something must have gone wrong.

Hi Shirley, I'm sorry we do not have an easy way to check that for you. However, have you looked at the retail section on our web site? Some retail sources are listed there and I hope that will assist. Our web site is www.terranovanurseries.com.

Good Luck,

I had also gone through all the retailers they listed. Guess they don't want to buy a whole flat of them. No one that I have found so far has them for sale.

Florence, AL(Zone 7a)

I got a message from Terra Nova today, suggesting I check with Plant Delights. Dan Heims, the person who wrote me, said that most retailers will begin to carry a plant if three or four people request it. But I'm still up for the group-buy thing, if we have an agreeable retailer among us.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

I spoke with Dr. Jim Waddick who introduced 'Missouri Marble".
He said he believes it is presently commercially available with
Crystal Palace perennials just south of Gary, Indiana [Crystal
Lake].
Are any of us near there???

'Missouri Marble' does get full size.
And its flowers are large and abundant.

Also .. to say 'Hi!' to his friends here this list !??
That they know who they are ... LOL
