seed saving forum?

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Dave, what about a place where people can discuss collecting and properly saving seeds?

The propagation forum looks likely, but we have many new gardeners that are wondering just where to find the seeds and what to do with them when they identify them.

There are many reasons why people garden and everyone needs to know how to preserve their seeds, whether they be 100 year old heirloom tomatoes, or their Aunt Irma's hollyhocks that grew by her shed. Both are important to our community here.

Also,it would help new traders to understand the steps needed to insure viable seed when they send out their trades.I know that I've opened more packages than I care to count with a mass of moldy seeds inside. The traders were careful to pack their envelopes so they wouldn't crush, but didn't realize that their contents needed to be dry before mailing.

I'm not sure whether a seperate forum is called for,or if we could just call it propagation and seed saving.

This would give the uninformed a place to ask questions and they might not be exactly sure what propagation means.

Also things like seed fermentation could be discussed with a larger group of gardeners.

Anyway, think it over...and everyone else, what do ya'll think????

I am in love with the idea. Anyone else?

Dave

P.S. I'm moving this to the general area where more people will see it.

I think this is a good idea too. I'm hoping that members will take lots of pictures of the seed heads of their different plants for the plant database this summer. Pictures of flowers can be found on just about any garden site but seed pods and seed heads are hard to find. I think it'd be a big help to everyone and it will really make Dave's rise above all the other sites!! :o) Anyone that trades seeds has lots of questions about harvesting them.

Great idea...I'm not called the Seedman around my parts for nothing! I'm good for edibles for sure.

I absolutely agree with this idea. It is an essential forum at Dave's Garden and there will be many to benefit from such, especially with photos included.

Look forward to it

The Seed Saving forum was launched several days ago. Go to the homepage and you'll find the link to it.
