Request for new forums

Kylertown, PA(Zone 5b)

Dave,

How about a Daylily forum and an Iris forum? We're coming into that time of year where the hybridizing and trading of these two very popular perrenials is about to begin. It would make it easier to "conduct business" if they had their own forums.

Thanks for the consideration!

Anyone else interested?

Would it get too confusing if we combined them into a "bulbs" forum? That way, it could be used in the fall when spring flowering bulbs are being ordered and traded, and in the spring for summer and fall-flowering bulbs. Or do you think it would get too confusing? The threads could be titled to help keep them separate within the forum....

Are daylilies bulbs? I've seen some that were and others that didn't appear to be.

Are bulbs classified as Perennials? I prefer the approach of creating just one forum for all this discussion, and am glad to see the response so far!

I am most definitely interested!! Indashade are you Shady Lady?

Oh, geez, Dave - why don't you just open up a whole can of worms here (grin)????

The American Hemerocallis Society describes the daylily as a perennial, with fibrous or tuberous roots. They also indicate that daylilies are in the Lilacaea family, along with onions and hyacinths, (which most people would define as bulbs, but many ornamental alliums are defined as perennials)

Before I make myself dizzy going in circles, I think we could have a "bulbs" forum, and let DG members define for themselves what goes in there......

Anyone or everyone else agree with creating a new forum called "Bulbs" for this purpose? I'm satisfied with the response, we just need a name now.

How about call it "Bulbs, Roots, & Rhizomes". Daylilies have roots & iris are rhizomes.

But everything has roots. How about "Bulbs and Friends". The friends suggests (without limiting) roots and rhizomes, corms, etc.

Count me in Dave!! I'm keen on anything bulbous. That includes daffies, snowdrops, tulips, crocuses, irises, gladioli, lilies, nerines, and a heap of others I intend planting this year!!! A very big YES!

Still need feedback on the name!

Here's an excerpt from an article that I thought was interesting:

"The term "bulb" is used by most people to refer to plants that have underground, fleshy storage structures. Only some of the plants commonly called bulbs actually are bulbs. The definition of a bulb is any plant that stores its complete life cycle in an underground storage structure...."

"Bulbs or bulb-like plants are usually perennials. They have a period of growth and flowering. This is followed by a period of dormancy where they die back to ground level at the end of each growing season....."

"Bulbs can be broken down into five types of storage structures. These include: true bulbs, corms, tubers, tuberous roots and rhizomes. A sixth category of fleshy roots has been added here for the purpose of showing the structure. Daylilies and peonies, which are popular plants with gardeners, are examples of this type."

Here's the link if anyone wants to read the whole thing:

I thought the first sentence sums it up nicely - most gardeners have a fairly loose "working definition" of bulbs. For the afficionados, there are the technical distinctions. But most of us just think of corms, tubers, and rhizomes as "bulbs". (Not to say we shouldn't become more precise in our definitions...)

Bulbs, Etc.
Bulbs Et Al
Bulbs and Friends

Any of them works for me!

It's settled. The forum has been created!

If daylilies are combined in any way with members of the lillium family the whole forum will be very confusing. There are enough "hemoholics" out there for a daylily forum all by itself. If, after 3 months it doesn't get used - then go with your perennial stuff. The real "hem afficionados" will visit the forum. (The emil hem robin has over 1000 members and in a day, I will get 30-40 emails - believe me, people are interested in daylilies.)

Roberta,

You're not the only one with this concern. We're discussing it over here:
