Hi all!

I recently found my way here by a kind hint over at GW and this seems to be a great place to 'hang my bonnet'! I love to talk gardening and have lots of seeds to trade or share. I'll have to get busy with a list.

I am also into ponding and just hate to see my pond one big ice cube now. But, spring is just around the corner and I'll be first in line to say 'welcome'!!

Thanks to you, Dave, for such a great site!

Have you thought about a de-icer for next year? I looked at them where I bought my pond and they were around $50. I thought absolutely no way. Anyway, the birds loved drinking and showering in the little fountain so much that I couldn't just let it freeze or take the pump out. I checked at a local farm supply store, and they had livestock de-icers for $20. It is so nice to see the birds use it, but I can't help but wonder why their feathers don't freeze!

Thanks for the suggestion Gabrielle. I looked at de-icers and decided to try an aquarium air pump first because they used less power and were cheaper. I just put the pump on an up-turned flower pot and then covered it with a larger flower pot to keep it dry. I connected a large air stone to the airline and dropped it just a few inches into the water...so far it has kept a nice large opening in the ice. Seems to be the favorite hang-out for all the birds and squirrels in the area! You know, I don't know why their feathers don't freeze or their little feet either...sure makes my shiver watching them!
