Filipendula

Coos Bay, OR

I received some plants for a plant sale for my animal welfare group. One of the plants is filipendula. I can't find it in any of my books. Help is needed. What the heck do I have here?

I don't know the common name for it but you have a lovely perennial. You might find info in our plant database. :-)

Hi, Geraniumgirl! Welcome to DG!!! Here is a link to the descriptions of 4 filipendula species listed here at DG in the plants database; click on "Read" on any of them to see the description that's been added. (You can also get to the database by clicking on "Plants" in the box at the right. These are all listed in the Perennials category.)

Without knowing the species, I can't tell you much more, other than the common name for all of them is Meadowsweet, and they are related to and therefore somewhat similar to Astilbes - they have ferny foliage and plumes of tiny flowers. Perhaps these descriptions will help you figure out which species you have.

Hi geraniumgirl, i've got my little book out and hope this is of some help, it says:

FILIPENDULA PURPUREA
an upright clump forming perennial that looks well planted in groups to form drifts of elegant, dark green foliage. Feathery clusters of red-purple flowers are carried above the leaves on purple-tinged stems in summer. Suitable for a waterside planting or bog garden, can also be naturalised in damp woodland. Grow in reliably moist, moderately fertile, humus-rich soil, in partial shade. can be planted in full sun, but do not let dry out. 1.2m(4ft)x 60cm(24in)

or it could be

FILIPENDULA RUBRA
Which is like the above but 2.5m(6-8ft)x 1.2m(4ft)

now you have to work out which one it is!!!

Louisa, you and I must have been posting the same thing at the same time!

If it's Filipendula rubra, it's also called Queen of the Prairie. It gets to be about 6 feet tall, has deeply cut foliage, likes full sun and has rosy pink flowers that look like a large tassel on top. There is also an F. ulmaria which is smaller and has greenish white flowers.

Well, let's hope Geraniumgirl feels welcome and I hope she doesn't feel like she just walked into a car dealership, and we were the salespeople waiting to pounce! (Yikes!!!!)

Geraniumgirl, trust me - the response you just received was unusual! There's lots of good advice to be had in the forums, but it generally doesn't flood in quite that quickly LOL!!!!
