I have a question about some of my dormant brugs in the basement. I'm finding that many of the upper twigs above the Y are dying back. They just sorta dry up ... back to the next node.... and drop off. Is this normal? Is it a sign that I'm keeping them too dry? or too wet? They don't have any leaves except a few at the tops, and the basement is quite dark.
My winterquarter
Same here Sue. I didn't worry about it because they did put out new growth. I would be interested in finding out why this happens though.
same here :(
Good. I'm glad I'm not the olny one :o). I wasn't too worried but some of my plants only have a couple nodes above the Y. I don't want them to keep dying back so they end up with no Y.
one of mine that I only have 1 of!! is dying back on one side to the Y. I saw it yesterday and don't know what to do with it.
I want the answers to these questions too. Glad it's not only mine. Makes me feel normal.
Often, immature (too fresh and green) sprouts will dry and fall off. There is need to worry as long as the whole stem doesnt start to shrink.
the whole stem on one side above the Y is starting to shrink. The trunk seems fine and the other part of the Y too. is this a problem?
My HG has totally shrunk and no new growth showing. It was a well branched brug and in the house where it is warm and it had southeast light. I think it is totally dead.
tiG - I had one side of the Y die on my PB/Rosamond. It's funny how they just dry up and break off cleanly at the node. The other half looks fine.
That's too bad about HG, Brugie. Didn't you get some buds on it this past summer? I just brought mine upstairs into the light. It's Yed now and I was hoping I might coax it into putting out some leaves. I have a small rooted cutting if you decide want another one.
Yes Sue, I had buds twice. The first flush fell off and the second came at the time the brugs had to be wintered. Nothing good has happened with this one yet. I do have rooted cuttings and will try again next year, but I just don't have room to be holding over plants that don't bloom.
Those new to brugs will be thankful for this information
Well, this thread was enlightning!
Monika, you are always such a great help, we all do really appreciate it.
Thanks for all the great information. This is my 1st year to try Brugs and the 5 I do have hasn't yet Y'd so I am going to bring them in this winter and see what happens next year. I just hope I don't kill them in the process.. Maybe one day I will see my first flower from any one of them.
Thanks all
Vickie
winterquarter now thats where i would like to be.. awesome plants.. i can only hope to have some .. great grower in a very nice country..
An old thread, but good information and a good refresher course at this time of year. As always, thanks Monika.
Wow, Just got finished reading this, and went back up to see how old the thread was cause I haven't seen this one before. LOL. It's been going a great while ! Loads of information here, Thanks for bumpin it back up Tig.
I'm learning as I read, but I do have one question.
If brugs don't loose their leaves on their own in the winter time. In the greenhouse. Is this ok. Do they not go through dormancy if they don't loose their leaves? Cause The only time mine has ever lost their leaves on their own is when we had a slight frost i n the greenhouse last year. And that won't ever happen again knock on wood. My temps stay 50 at night and 65 to 70 during the day in the dead of winter in the greenhouse. They don't usually flower during the winter though. But have never lost their leaves.
Just wanted to make sure that was ok. Since I hear d they need to go through some sort of dormancy period.

They dont grow during dormancy but do not have to loose the leaves.
Thanks Monika
