Does anyone know....

What flowers that will grow in very dry, sandy soil?
My parents were here over the weekend and my Dad was bitten by the Gardening Bug when he saw my grow light setup and plans for the gardens this spring. He lives and a farm that was long ago the shoreline of a lake. It is very sandy and dry. All water runs down the gentle slope of the his property as he is on the upper portion of a hillside. Grass struggles. He is going to ammend it best he can (manure is plentiful) but it won't ever be ideal.
I told him about the shared knowledge at Dave's and not to fear. So now I come to you, my friends.
What should my Dad plant? What can I start under my lights for him? And do you have any advice for gardening in these less than ideal conditions?

Lantana grows in dry areas and self-seeds, too! Also there are different types of perennial salvias that can handle those conditions.

Our soil is also very sandy. I would suggest your dad create specific planting areas that can be bordered to contain the soil (like raised beds) and mulch, mulch, mulch. Raised beds will also help to control plants that might get out of hand. Since the ground is on a slope, maybe some slight terracing would prevent erosion and slow the drainage.

I should have mentioned... zone 5.
The lantana would make a winter here but the salvia's will. I am looking them up and making a list. Thankyou Amaryllisgal.
Do you think Yarrow would make it? I know I can't kill it in my garden and i have tried :)
