Helleborus seeds

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

My H. niger seems to be setting quite a few seed pods. How long should I leave them before saving them?

Kathleen, hellebores are tricky. If you wait too long, they spill. Not long enough, not ready. I didn't catch mine in time last year and I have bunches of tiny seedlings. Where is Calalily - I think she grows hellebores too. Brenda

Can you loosely tie a bag around them? Don't know as I don't grow them. :)

Last year was the first time I tried to save the seeds - when the pods started to turn brown, I squeezd them a little, if they popped open, and the seeds were brown, I knew it was time. I kept some and spread the rest around, this is the first year I have babies, about 2 inched high now. I'm so thrilled!!

Did you read on Mark's other thread that the seeds need to be fresh to do well-so why are we saving them, duh!!

LOL, I'd love to tie a bag around them but the puppies would just steal it! They have taken all of my jars offf my starts for toys. Fortunately, everything is well mulched so should be fine. I will watch the seed pods for brown - I suspcted that would be the sign. Right now, it's snowing and verry cold and windy and i'm not going to worry about them!
