Apple Tree help needed

Several years ago in Organic Magazine, they had a solution you could mix up, put in milk jugs & hang in the trees to attract the bugs so you didn't have to spray your apple trees. Unfortunately, when we moved, we pitched all the old mags. & I no longer have that copy.
Does anyone on here know what the solution may be? At the time I didn't have an apple tree, so I didn't make note of the ingredients. We now have an apple tree & I don't really want to spray it, but the apples get the bugs in them.
