Lauren's Grape is a single violet-purple poppy that was culled from a mix .... by Lauren Springer. One of the gardening shows featured her on an episode a couple of years ago. The 'Lauren's Grape' poppy has been saught after ever since. I got a pack last year from the Flower & Herb Exchange. I put the seed pack in a special place because I wanted to make sure I got out and planted them when the time came. Well... I forget where my special place was... and never got them planted. I did find them later in the summer - so I'll try again this year.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

So, now you will have something special for this year. Was at K~mart looking at seeds. MArtha doesn;t have anything special in poppies. I have never grown them before. Never had any luck. My nextdoor neighbor lady had one orange one that would grow so nice. I would get the seed pod and empty the seeds in the earth. put it in whole. didn;t matter what I did. Nothing would happen at my house. and sure enough . when she died, the new people tore out all the things she had planted. I was able to rescue her lupine though. It bloomed for me last year. If it makes it this year. it will be a miracle!Poppysue, you have been such a big help

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Mimi the orange ones are probably Oriental poppies. I always start them indoors in cell-packs. They say to direct seed them but it's never worked for me either - maybe it's just for southerners. The orientals handle the transplanting better than the annual poppies. They can be started indoors and then planted out in spring. They'll bloom the second year... and then you'll have them forever. They send roots down to China and don't like to be moved but it's possible after they're done flowering.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i just throw the seeds on the ground this time of the year. keep it constantly watered till they sprout. of course the soil where i am is harsh sand. i do incorporate some peat moss on the soil i work on prior to throwing the seeds. hope that help some... ma vie

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

Was wondering if I could start the seeds in a tray? I have never tried that.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i could be wrong, but from what i understand about poppies, they are sensitive to being move. i did try to pot some, no success at all :(. maybe Sue knew better. i just tried Ca. poppies last year. with the winds constantly blowing... this year they sprouted all over the place.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

You're right MaVie. They don't like transplanting and it could even kill them. Some species tolerate it better than others. Papaver somniferum are very sensitive to transplanting. They should be direct seeded or started in peat pellets to avoid having the roots disturbed.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

I just went out a while ago to sow my poppy seeds...
And Poppysue, You know those special gigantiums that you sent me....well, I too put them in a special place with some black paeony poppies, and yep, you guessed it, Can't find them. Will look again in a bit - lol

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Sumthin about those special places! If you need more pebble ... I still have some.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Thanks Poppy sue, I am sure I will find them.
One thing I was wondering about that you might be able to help me with...
If I sow some seeds this week, some next week and some more say next month, will I have staggered blooms? It seems like last year I thought I had tried that, but they all bloomed at once, and it was a show stopper, but I wonder if I could have them bloom all summer long? or is that asking for the impossible?

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

think its time for some post it note around the house!!!!!lolol BETTER YET!!! We could all tell eachother our hiding places!

ok - mine is a crystal vase on my antique desk

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

oh! take a picture of your desk. mine is a cylindar desk.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Pebble, I think you could prolong the bloom with staggered sowing. Just remember after the temps get too warm you may not get very good germination results.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

if memory serves me right, last year the Ca. poppies did bloom several times of the year. right now they are in profusion of green growth. their leave are nice too. reminds me of similarity to carrot leaves. ;)!

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I like the Cal. poppies. They bloom just about the whole summer here but they get sorta of lanky at the end of the season. Did you grow other colors MaV... or the orange ones? I never seem to get the colored ones to do as well.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

I have been trying to get some red poppies to bloom. Last year I planted red poppies and all I got was orange ones even though I didn`t plant orange. Could it be the soil. This year I have several packs of red poppies and I am going to plant them. Hopefully I can get some red ones to bloom.

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Poppysue, I will try the staggered method and see how well it goes, it actually gets pretty cool in the evenings/nights, even in summer.
Last year I had some lemon yellow california poppies.
But my favorites were the paeony poppies from poppysue, and some lacinatums....definite show stoppers. The regular single poppies simply paled in comparison.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i totally agree Sue. that is the only downfall of poppies, specially w/the super windy weather here. i did try some Shirly poppies with no luck either :(. i grow the regular Ca. poppies... as i had no previous experience with it. so far so good. now they are scattered all over the yard. i dare not move them though.

Busybee... did u incorporate some fertilizer in ur planting area? these plants are like people too, they need nourishment in order to perform well. just a thought.

pebble.... have u tried planting some ranunculous [sp?]? they are show stoppers too!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Well, the problem with ranunculous is that when it rains the petals stick together, then turn brown and get slimy and funny looking, and since I do live in a constant rain area, this is a consideration. I did have some a couple of years ago, and yes, I loved them....

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

Yes MaVie,
I used rabbit manure which I use in all of my flower beds. The soil there has a lot of lime in it which was stock piled years ago. It was just an asumption because I planted plenty of red seed.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Mingsmimi - you've got mail.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

JoanJ...now what are we gonna do????? no seeds at Select seeds...... :(

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I don't know. Royal Bummer!!! I am going to look to see if anyone else has them. How could they have sold out already? Makes me wonder about them. I have lots of other stuff on that order form too, but now I don't even want to send it.

Sharpsville, PA(Zone 5a)

:( BOOHOO FOR US!!!!!!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

try this site... u two can divide between urselves... http://www.poppies.org/store/seeds/ good luck :)!

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Hey Guys: I'm right here in somniferum poppy heaven, and I am the proud owner of a pack of Lauren's Grape! I'd already placed my Select Seed order online when the new catalog arrived, so I just had to make another order to get them. If they are likely to come back true from seed, I should have lots of seeds next spring.

Most of the annual poppies do well here and put out lots off seed at the end of the season. I have Antique Flemish (which do come true from seed), Bombast Rose, Black Peony, Pink Peony, White Cloud Peony, Heirloom, Danish Flag, Summer Fruits Peony Poppy Mix, Double Reds, Double Lavenders, Ladybirds, Corn Poppies, Hen & Chickens, Shirley Mixes, Angels Choir Shirleys, one or two kinds of Californias, Przemko breadseed, and Hungarian breadseed. I've had excellent luck with transplanting, except for the Hen & Chickens, but I'm working on that!

I have an oriental poppy that has been in my south bed for years, and it puts out wonderful seed every year. Last year I received a free pack of Great Red seed, and now have several young plants wintering over. I thought they were just like the other orientals, but I guess not. I did notice an unusually large root system in the 4" pot. I just love poppies, and there are other gardeners in Seward, Alaska that would agree. We can grow the Meconopsis Grandis quite well here, as well as Icelandics. There are some small alpine varieties that grow on the mountainsides as well....WZ

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

WZ... can u save me some seeds? i will be more than glad to pay for postage whenever u're ready. TIA... ma vie

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Oh WZ, you lucky one you! Please keep us in mind if they put out seed. I'd be willing to try them to see if they come true to seed. By then, I might have some seeds to trade for them. You were the smartest one, and ordered early. Good job! Sounds like you are growing lots of great poppies. That's inspiring for me. That means I can grow them too, huh? I've been planting some, but wasn't sure if they would come back if perennials, or if the seed would survive until spring if they were reseeding annuals. Sounds like I can worry about something else now. I so love having you here. You bring a breath of fresh air to me. I was getting discouraged about gardening in this zone, but you're saving me. According to the USDA map, I'm zone 3, but also on the border of zone 4. Again, I am so glad to have you here.

Did I say I was glad to have you here? LOL!
Joan

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Joan... although i live in the desert, last winter temp was 10 degs. F. whereas the summer soars to 110 deg.F, with constant winds blowing. some of the poppies i tried for the first time are coming up, so are the seeds that blew all over the place are emerging too. i guess poppies can either be pirennial/annual?? i just threw the seeds on the ground that i work on with some peat moss and superphosphate. so far last summer, they all came up. so do not loose hope, u got better chances of growing poppies in ur area.

basing from observation on the poppies reserve down the road from me, the poppies were planted on hillsides. they flower profusely during years when there are plenty of rain. no rain on poppies reserve, no flowers emerging. last year, there hill side and mountains full of poppies. some time in May or June i will keep a note to see the poppies reserve area and take some pictures to post here.

i could remember years ago, my brother and his family took me to go with them and see the poppies reserve. it is awesome! here see for urself ...http://home.earthlink.net/~johnmcgrew/poppy/poppy.htm told u the site is awesome. what an experience to be there!!

Gals - I found Lauren's Grape here - http://www.seedhunt.com/index.html - might as well write and see if it's available.

MaVie you'll have to post pictures when you go. I bet it's fabulous!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i will Sue! i am looking forward to it, i even bought extra memories for my camera so i dont ran out of space. i've been watching the site, and call the Angelope poppy reserve to find out if/how much poppy population is in bloom.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

That sounds beautiful MaVieRose. I can't wait to see the pictures.

Poppysue, I looked at the site you posted, and there's no phone number or email that I could find. It would be nice to know if they have the poppies before I mail off a check, but I might anyway. Have to think about that one for a minute or two.
