Special Font Wanted

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Howdy gang! Since this is a misc GenDis forum I figgered this is the place to ask!
My friend up the road is looking for a very special FONT. He spent many years as a typesetter (with the really ancient machines!) and recently has discovered a font called "Caslon" and wants me to download it if possible. He was told it could be downloaded for free from the Net but all I can find are places that want to sell it to you. And get this! $25 for the Caslon Boldface, $25 for the Caslon Italics, $25 for ...well, you get the picture. $$$$
My friend has even gotten me interested in Caslon, I've found it dates back to 1772...guess that piques the Heirloom gene in me, eh?
I've checked my system out...no Caslon on it. Can't find it free on the net. So, was wondering if anyone out there could check their system to see if they have it or could perhaps lead me in a direction that would have it. (Know any 'font collectors'?) Thanks.

We don't have it downloaded, and in my searches, I can only find it for sale. I'll check with my husband, though, as he is into role playing games and he knows a lot about fonts.

Hi Shoe!
I got 3 different Caslon types in a Print Shop program that I have.I've got an email ready to go with an attachment showing what they look like, but I think you have a new email addy from the one that I have.
Email me and I'll send them to you.
Maybe GW can help us figure out how to send you the font section of the program. This thing has zillions of fonts, maybe there's something else in it that he may want.

on this one scroll down a bit...413 and 414 are Caslon fonts that you can download for free
http://www.filelibrary.com/Contents/Multi-Platform/100/11.html

here's another one

scroll down to Miscellaneous (it's the Les Miserables site but they have the font to download too)

I also found that the equivalent for Caslon is the font Casablanca, check that out. I have that one that I could send you in e-mail. Read it on a comparison chart of fonts on the web.

here's another one that has the Caslon Antique

Let me know if any of these are working for you

The fonts would be in your C:windowsfonts folder. I may have that font on one of my uninstalled programs' installation CD's, but I don't currently have it loaded on my system. They usually have the font name as part of the filename. All you have to do is e-mail the files with that font name and have the recipient copy them into his fonts directory. Hope that helps. :)

Wow...what a great response folks! Thanks! Melody, I just answered your email...for Gw, I got to a spot that asked me what program I wanted to open her file with and I chose WinWord. I only viewed code of some kind. Guess I picked the wrong program, eh?
Flowox, you've been very busy! I'm gonna check out all your hyperlinks later this evening. (Me and DD just got back from a shopping trip, I need to close up shop, she needs winding down!)
I'll let you know if my hillbilly mind was able to download the fonts...my friend is gonna be tickled pink!

Shoe... I have the postscript (that's a printer language) Caslon fonts. Let me know if all the above haven't worked. I love how Caslon looks, and used it a lot in typesetting and design when I did that for a living. I just have 6 in that font family: Caslon Regular, Caslon Italic, Caslon Semibold, Caslon Semibold Italic, Caslon Bold and Caslon Bold Italic. Postscript fonts usually require a printer that can read the font descriptions, but many fonts now come in TrueType, which is close, and work on most printers.

Wonderful! Thanks Darius! I'll let you know how it works out. (Maybe I can trade you some gourds, eh?)

Shoe - you won't be able to view the fonts using a word-processor directly. You may be able to right-click on the font file and see if there's a VIEW selection. Basically, truetype fonts, the type most used, are stored in the Windowsfonts folder and that's where all your programs look when they display the fonts you may choose.

Sheesh...at this point in time...I've downloaded a couple of the caslons from Flo's hyperlinks (many thanks flo) but when it asks which program I want to use to open it apparently I'm not telling it the correct program.
One said I need to use Winzip...but no go. (I've never been able to get winzip to work, due to stupidity or somthing on my part probably...at this point I'm embarassed to keep buggin ya'll....maybe I should've put this in the Computer Forum).
Anyway, at this time, I've apparently d-loaded the font, but can't open it.

Ok Shoe, I'll download those for you then send them in an attachment. All you have to do with the attachments is click on save as and then open up C:, then windows folder, then fonts folder and stick them in there. You will not be able to open the files, they'll just go into your font folder and will then be available when you switch your font. Does that make sense?

You'll have to e-mail me though so I have your e-mail address to send it to you

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

okay Flo, I'll try it...bear with me tho!

no problem Shoe, whenever you are ready and would like my help, just send me over an e-mail :)
