Pennisetum 'Rubrum'

Porterfield, WI(Zone 4b)

Does anyone know are the seedheads of Pennisetum 'Rubrum' going to be fertile? I only had one plant, and the lady at the greenhouse where I bought it last year told me it could only be propagated vegetatively, does that mean division? I saved alot of the seed heads, hoping she was just protecting her interests. If not, I am wintering the poor thing over inside, but it doesn't even resemble the beauty it was last year. Should I just keep it going and divide it in spring?

The best thing would be to keep it alive, replant, and also try the seeds. Some of the fountain grasses either don't come true to seed or the seeds are infertile. It's hard to know which is which, one person says one thing, another something else. Good luck with it, I hope all the seeds are good. You could try to start some now, but that still won't tell you if they will come true.

This person says the seed is sterile, if I got the right one.

Yes, Brugie, you have the right one,it was Beautiful, every bit as big, if not larger than the bottom pic in your link. Sadly, I let it get frost, but it didn't kill it. It's going to get the special treatment until spring, then I'll take tig's advice and see what I can do to divide it. I will try to start the seeds, but I won't swap them as they may not be good. Thanks, L

Legit - I've tried the seeds a couple times. No luck. I think it is sterile. I was dumb and even bought some seeds off e-bay. Lesson learned.

Thanks Poppysue. What a disappointment! It could have been a great thing! Now if I can keep my cat from eating whats left to it! Guess I need to plant her some of her own.
