Anyone know how to plant these seeds? It's a nightshade from south america.
Solanum seaforthianum
poppy, are those the yellow lantern?? The T&M germination database says for Solanum :15-21 days to germination seeds need light sow at 70-80* in Well drained soil Surface sow The plants should be placed outdoors through the summer for pollination.
No these are somthing else. I think the seeds came from Dinu or Babalu... not sure. These are a berry. I'd imagine that they'd want warm temps since they're native to SA. I guess I'll just plant them and see.
I just planted some of the yellow lantern thingies today. Have you planted yours? Any germination yet?
I planted mine two days ago. I'll let you know:) I did soak them a while, figured if they were anything like brugs....I didn't plant the whole package though.
It's a great plant! I received a start in trade last summer. It's blooming right now in Houston! Was going to take a picture but the battery in my camera needs a charge! Maybe tomorrow! No experience with seed!
Thanks Alhanks! - That's nice to know. The pictures on google look nice http://images.google.com/images?q=Solanum+seaforthianum&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search I wonder if it would grow Ok in a pot with a brugmansia?
poppy, look at this picture, it looks like a very big vine, can you find the size anywhere? http://www.sci.kun.nl/bgard/images/bgimages.htm
Seedman has the seeds, but I'm wondering if I really need another vine :) may not be able to resist.
It sure is pretty in the pics. I have only 6 of the berries. I'm not sure if there's a bunch of seeds in each or just one. If I get good germination I'll send you a seedling tiG.
oh, sorry, wasn't begging!! just wondered if you found anything that tells you how big.
MaVies link says 20ft. Kinda big for a brug pot - but ya never know. It might stay smaller in my zone. I'll be glad to share with ya anyways ... if they grow.
Poppysue, I just looked this up in one of my books. It says "also known as Italian Jasmine, St Vincent Vine" to 20 ft, min temp 45-50 degrees. Sow seeds at 64-68 degrees in spring. Now I have seen this plant for sale at Target here in FL. Hope this helps. Dee
tig, thanks so much for putting the link in to that wonderful photos site. Just spent a very happy time looking at a load of plants i'll never be able to grow lol, but aren't they just amazing pictures?? i've bookmarked it to come back to - barely scratched the surface of all that's there!! :)
